MILWAUKEE \u2013 The Cambridge Commons Residence Hall operated by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) is one of six environmentally friendly buildings that will be recognized at the 10th annual Sustainable Energy Efficiency (Se2<\/sup>) Conference, sponsored by the Wisconsin Green Building Alliance (WGBA).<\/p>\n

The conference is held Oct. 4 from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Wisconsin Room of the UWM Union, 2200 E. Kenwood Ave. The awards ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m.<\/p>\n

Completed in 2010, Cambridge Commons houses 700 UWM students in the Kenilworth neighborhood near campus. It is a LEED Gold Certified building that features a green recreation area and two green roofs. Designed by HGA, the building will receive WGBA\u2019s Special Citation for Energy Efficiency in new construction.<\/p>\n

The Se2<\/sup> awards honor leadership in energy efficient and sustainable design, construction and operation of Wisconsin commercial and other non-residential buildings.<\/p>\n

Located on a redeveloped brownfield site, Cambridge Commons has achieved overall energy usage 26.4 percent below code. Stormwater runoff has been reduced by 90 percent compared to predevelopment. And the housing staff supports energy and water reduction competitions within the building, among campus residence halls, and with peer institutions.<\/p>\n

Two other buildings on UW System campuses will receive awards \u2013 the Wisconsin Energy Institute at UW-Madison will receive a New Construction Award of Merit. Also, Sage Hall at UW-Oshkosh has earned a Special Citation for Lighting and Daylighting. <\/strong><\/p>\n

Recent changes that will launch nationally in November will make the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED\u00ae) v.4 certification process more stringent, and will be a main topic at the conference.<\/p>\n

Also, Chrissy Macken of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), who is assistant project manager for LEED v.4, will moderate a panel discussion on how LEED v4 was applied at Prospect Elementary School in Lake Mills, Wis., one of only a few test projects in the country.<\/p>\n
