The Institute for Urban Education will offer a free virtual speaker series Aug. 3-7 as part of its 2020 Professional Development Academy. The Institute is a UW System initiative, housed at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, that helps prepare teachers to work in urban schools.<\/p>\n
The theme of this year\u2019s speaker series is \u201cCulturally Relevant Pedagogy: Education in the 21st Century.<\/p>\n
Speakers and times are:<\/p>\n
Aug. 3:<\/strong> Gloria Ladson-Billings will deliver the keynote speech, \u201cEducating in a Post-Pandemic World.\u201d Ladson Billings was a faculty member at the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus for more than 26 years and held the Kellner Family Distinguished Chair in Urban Education. She has written numerous books, and her research focuses on the successful education of black children.<\/p>\n Aug. 4:<\/strong> A panel of parents and students will discuss \u201cWhat to Know Before You Teach.\u201d Andre Bennett, director of alternative education for the Racine Unified School District, will serve as moderator.<\/p>\n Aug. 5:<\/strong> Andre Bennett, director of alternative education for the Racine Unified School District, will speak on \u201cUnidentified Bias and Its Impact on Students.\u201d<\/p>\n Aug. 6:<\/strong> Denise Ross, chair of the Institute for Urban Education, will speak on “Reframing Academic Excellence: Pedagogy and Social Justice.”<\/p>\n Aug. 7:<\/strong> Reggie Jackson, an education consultant with Nurturing Diversity Partners, will speak on “The Hidden Impact of Segregation: A History of Segregated Schools.”<\/p>\n All sessions go from 2:30-4 p.m. will be held via Zoom. Registration ends July 31, and spaces are limited.
