{"id":81842,"date":"2020-03-19T12:48:58","date_gmt":"2020-03-19T17:48:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=81842"},"modified":"2020-04-07T13:07:38","modified_gmt":"2020-04-07T18:07:38","slug":"uwm-works-to-help-instructors-move-courses-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/uwm-works-to-help-instructors-move-courses-online\/","title":{"rendered":"UWM works to help instructors move courses online"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning is working quickly to help instructors move classes online before students return virtually March 30.<\/p>\n<p>Starting Monday, March 16, CETL began offering 13 <a href=\"https:\/\/ltcworkshops.org\/events\/categories\/move-your-course-online-for-spring-2020\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Move Your Course Online for Spring 2020<\/a> workshops, 10 workshops on <a href=\"https:\/\/ltcworkshops.org\/events\/categories\/synchronous-video-conferencing-with-collaborate-ultra\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Synchronous Video Conferencing with Collaborate Ultra<\/a>, and four <a href=\"https:\/\/ltcworkshops.org\/events\/categories\/canvas-basics\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Canvas: Basics<\/a> workshops. (Register by clicking the links.)<\/p>\n<p>UWM already had the largest online presence of any Wisconsin school, public or private, according to Diane Reddy, director of CETL, with approximately 850 courses offered completely or partly online. More than 40 degree programs can be completed online.<\/p>\n<p>For many students, taking classes online is at least somewhat familiar. About 11,000 students \u2013 more than 40% \u2013 in any given semester take at least one online course, Reddy said. \u201cIt\u2019s not an unusual thing at UWM.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, UWM has instructors who\u2019ve never done an online course. That\u2019s why the center is working hard to get faculty and teaching staff proficient in offering courses online. The workshops will be tailored to the needs of participants.<\/p>\n<p>Even with building closures, the courses will continue. \u201cCETL will continue to be operational no matter what,\u201d Reddy said. \u201cWe will continue to provide support to instructors and carry out all workshops virtually. Instructors do not need to come to the Kenwood campus. We will use technology to assist them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instructors can incorporate in their own lesson plans, assignments, syllabi, quizzes, PowerPoint and lectures. Participants will also learn how to create quizzes and exams and facilitate online discussions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea is that instructors will walk away with their March 29 week done and in Canvas,\u201d said Dylan Barth, teaching, learning and technology consultant at CETL.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith that first week ready, instructors will be more confident about moving forward into the semester, added Reddy. \u201cAnd we\u2019ll be here to support them. Supporting instructors is our top priority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to workshops, CETL will be offering a number of online resources:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ltcworkshops.org\/events\/categories\/move-your-course-online-for-spring-2020\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Move Your Course Online for Spring 2020<\/a> will also be offered virtually. Instructors can attend via Collaborate Ultra.<\/li>\n<li>Self-help guide every instructor should review: Quick Start Guide to Moving Your Course Online. In addition, a self-paced Canvas course is available.<\/li>\n<li>The workshop on Synchronous Video Conferencing with Collaborate Ultra is virtual \u2013 it uses the Collaborate Ultra tool as the vehicle for the workshop.<\/li>\n<li>Livestream sessions will walk through these resources and to answer questions. A third follow-up session on March 31 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. will be held for folks who may have additional questions. Here are the dates and links to join: <a href=\"https:\/\/us.bbcollab.com\/guest\/b9482739a1124ceb97bc996c1f133ca7\">March 23, 12:30-1:30 p.m.<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/us.bbcollab.com\/guest\/42885f67f6b04e538ebcaa80e887fc25\">March 31, 12:30-1:30 p.m.<\/a> Sessions will be recorded and posted to the site itself for those unable to join in person.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Instructors who need additional information, support and assistance, can contact CETL at <a href=\"mailto:cetl@uwm.edu\">cetl@uwm.edu<\/a> or 414 229-4319. Virtual appointments can be made via email, scheduled Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>CETL is partnering with school and college support offices to help during the transition. In addition, help with Canvas is also <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/canvas\/instructors\/instructor-canvas-support\/\">available after
