Two new graduate student exhibitions will be opening on Thursday, Feb. 27, in the Emile H. Mathis Gallery.<\/p>\n

Gallery talks from both curators will occur at 5:30pm on opening day.<\/p>\n

“Claim, Consume, Curate”<\/strong><\/p>\n

What was the first object you bought with your own money? What did your parents\u2019 living room look like? What dish are you afraid to break?<\/p>\n

“Claim, Consume, Curate” examines the material culture of modern life in three contexts. \u201cThe Home,\u201d \u201cThe Boutique\u201d and \u201cThe Museum\u201d include over 50 functional objects from the UWM Art Collection. Here, we examine how people use objects to express their identity, belonging, and memory. These meanings then allow objects to inform a sense of place. Observe the changes in functional art prompted by the growing middle class, industrialization, the rise of shopping, and a shift in museum culture. How have these changes affected you?<\/p>\n

Explore your answer at the exhibition and its \u201cInteractive Station\u201d where you can touch objects and sketch your connections. To get involved with special programs like gallery talks and special tours contact hrsheets@uwm.edu<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cEthiopian Art: Christian Narratives from the Kebra Nagast\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

This exhibit displays religious and political artworks with the Kebra Nagast, Ethiopia\u2019s sacred Christian text. Most of these works date from the 20th century, but the religious motifs are ancient. Ethiopian emperors claim political authority through a lineage traced to King Solomon and that Ethiopia holds God\u2019s chosen people, not Jerusalem. Twentieth century art reflects these themes by presenting the past, present, and future in one scene and uses imagery to depict symbolic struggles between good and evil.<\/p>\n
