Margaret \u201cPeggy\u201d Rozga often finds that poetry and life are much like the common question \u201chow do you like your eggs?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI always order poached eggs,\u201d Rozga said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd it seems to me that everyone else orders scrambled. But that\u2019s too much like life. When a person finds a poem that they identify with, that resonates with them, it unscrambles this mishmash, this interwoven whatever. Suddenly something emerges and it is clear and makes sense of this whole picture, sort of like a poached egg does. You know, there it is. Perfectly round, not burnt, not rubbery. Intact. The parts are clear.\u201d<\/p>\n

To Rozga, recently named Wisconsin\u2019s poet laureate<\/a> for 2019-20, poetry is language at its most resourceful.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt values emotion as precisely as possible. It is the physical sounds of words. It is the music of words,\u201d said Rozga, emeritus professor of English at UW-Milwaukee at Waukesha.<\/p>\n

Engaging with people<\/h3>\n

As poet laureate, Rozga wants to engage with people and enjoy the beauty of life and poetry and their coexistence together as she travels the state in her duties.<\/p>\n

Rozga plans to reach out to the community, especially its youth, through social media.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t want to my posts to sit there for observation. I want to engage people with a dialogue, said Rozga. \u201cI want to start a conversation.\u201d<\/p>\n

She hopes that ideas gleaned from poems such as Shakespeare\u2019s Sonnet 18 (\u201cShall I compare thee to a summer\u2019s day?\u201d) or artists such as Joan Mir\u00f3 will encourage creativity. Rozga plans to share these ideas on her social media accounts as daily prompts called Sunday\u2019s Sentence, Monday\u2019s Muse, What\u2019s up Wednesday and Friday Favorites.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to work poetry more into our daily conversations,\u201d said Rozga.<\/p>\n

Teacher spurred love of poetry<\/h3>\n

Poetry has always been a huge part of her life, Rozga said. She credits an English teacher who helped form this love at an early age, tasking her and her classmates with memorizing many poems.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s absolutely one of my favorites,\u201d said Rozga, fondly recalling an Emily Dickinson poem, \u201cI\u2019m Nobody! Who are you?\u201d<\/p>\n

I\u2019m Nobody! Who are you?<\/em><\/p>\n

Are you \u2013 Nobody \u2013 too?<\/em><\/p>\n

Then there\u2019s a pair of us!<\/em><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t tell! they\u2019d advertise \u2013 you know!<\/em><\/p>\n

How dreary \u2013 to be \u2013 Somebody!<\/em><\/p>\n

How public \u2013 like a Frog \u2013 <\/em><\/p>\n

To tell one\u2019s name –\u00a0 the livelong June \u2013<\/em><\/p>\n

To an admiring Bog!<\/em><\/p>\n

That poem, Rozga said, helped her not only as a young woman but also now also as she begins her new responsibilities as poet laureate.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo me, a person who was struggling with their identity (as a teenager), the poem is actually a person at peace with their identity or rationalizing the feeling of being lost in the crowd. Then she turns that around \u2014 you don\u2019t want to stand out,\u201d said Rozga. \u201cThere\u2019s something artificially imposing about that.\u201d<\/p>\n

A new understanding<\/h3>\n

Now as an adult and Wisconsin\u2019s poet laureate, Rozga understands the poem differently.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a shift and that goes on from being with your family and friends to being a public speaker, a public persona that sometimes is a little uncomfortable,\u201d Rozga said.<\/p>\n

As Rozga travels the state in her new position, she will focus on community and helping people discover or nurture their own love of poetry with several workshops or events.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to work poetry more into our daily conversations,\u201d said Rozga. \u201cI hope to do that with Facebook and Twitter and workshops as I travel.\u201d<\/p>\n
