{"id":65083,"date":"2018-11-29T15:21:10","date_gmt":"2018-11-29T21:21:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=65083"},"modified":"2019-01-16T13:32:08","modified_gmt":"2019-01-16T19:32:08","slug":"uwm-implements-smoke-and-tobacco-free-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/uwm-implements-smoke-and-tobacco-free-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"UWM implements smoke- and tobacco-free policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As part of UW-Milwaukee\u2019s commitment to fostering a safe campus environment for all students and employees, UWM is implementing a smoke- and tobacco-free policy across the main Milwaukee campus and all other UWM campuses, residence halls and associated buildings. The goal is to mitigate the established health risks associated with the use of tobacco products and exposure to secondhand smoke.<\/p>\n<p>The policy includes any tobacco product regulated as such by the FDA, such as cigarettes, cigars, e-cigarettes and chewing tobacco.<\/p>\n<p>There are a few exceptions to the policy. For example, if smoking is required as part of an artistic performance or research project. In which case, the person seeking an exemption should contact the provost\u2019s office for approval.<\/p>\n<p>There will be an emphasis on education, particularly as the policy is rolled out over the upcoming spring semester. However, repeat offenders found using tobacco products on campus will be more likely cited for policy violation or face other disciplinary processes through their employer or the dean\u2019s
