{"id":63013,"date":"2018-09-27T16:16:18","date_gmt":"2018-09-27T21:16:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=63013"},"modified":"2018-09-27T16:17:35","modified_gmt":"2018-09-27T21:17:35","slug":"center-for-21st-century-studies-is-turning-50-youre-invited","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/center-for-21st-century-studies-is-turning-50-youre-invited\/","title":{"rendered":"Center for 21st Century Studies is turning 50; You&#8217;re invited!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MILWAUKEE _ Scholars, students and artists from across the nation will gather at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on Friday, Oct. 26, to celebrate a landmark moment on UWM\u2019s path to becoming a major American research university.<\/p>\n<p>The university\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/oiebvb\/c1w01p\/0f8hui\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #3399ff\">Center for 21st Century Studies<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(C21), one of the nation\u2019s first humanities research centers and a decades-long destination for some of the world\u2019s foremost artists and thinkers, is turning 50. To celebrate, UWM will host a public symposium that will be a reunion for many who helped make the center a household name among artists, writers and scholars in the 1970s and \u201880s. The center was known as the Center for 20th Century Studies from its founding in 1968 until its name change in 2000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the time I started graduate school at Berkeley in the mid-1970s, I knew about UWM from the Center for 20th Century Studies and the modern studies doctoral program, both of which were on the cutting-edge of critical theory in the academy,\u201d explained Richard Grusin, director of the Center for 21st Century Studies and a UWM distinguished professor of English. \u201cAll of the most famous thinkers and many famous artists and writers came through Milwaukee in the center\u2019s first decades. Professor Emerita Patricia Mellencamp taught film at UWM for 30 years and spoke at many of its most influential conferences.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/t.e2ma.net\/click\/oiebvb\/c1w01p\/g88hui\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #3399ff\">Mellencamp\u2019s work<\/span><\/a>, in addition to the center\u2019s major conferences on international film, helped establish film studies as a new academic discipline in the United States and abroad.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The symposium will be held 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, in Curtin Hall 175 and is free and open to the public.
