{"id":59630,"date":"2018-06-07T15:30:55","date_gmt":"2018-06-07T20:30:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=59630"},"modified":"2018-06-07T15:30:55","modified_gmt":"2018-06-07T20:30:55","slug":"regents-committee-oks-53-million-for-northwest-quad-renovations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/regents-committee-oks-53-million-for-northwest-quad-renovations\/","title":{"rendered":"Regents committee OKs $53 million for Northwest Quad renovations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Several construction and renovation projects at UW-Milwaukee, UW-Eau Claire and UW-River Falls on Thursday were recommended for final approval at the board\u2019s Capital Planning and Budget Committee meeting.<\/p>\n<p>Projects include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Design and construction of the gift-funded UW-Eau Claire Visitor Center and Admissions building ($5.5 million)<\/li>\n<li>Initial renovations of the UW-Milwaukee\u2019s Northwest Quad, formerly a hospital, into business and instructional space ($53 million)<\/li>\n<li>Renovation and addition of lounge space to May Hall, a residence hall on the UW-River Falls campus (budget increase of $2.4 million)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In addition, UW-Milwaukee presented a case for adding three capital projects to the 2019-21 budget, including replacing its aging Chemistry Building and extending the utilities to support a new building just south of the current one. The cost of the project would be $120 million.<\/p>\n<p>The board must submit capital requests for the next biennium budget to the state by October, with the final vote on inclusion in spring 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think our Chemistry Building has a fair claim of worst not-yet-addressed science building in the UW System,\u201d said Robin Van Harpen, UW-Milwaukee\u2019s vice chancellor for finance and administrative affairs. \u201cThere\u2019s a question as to just how much longer we can keep using the building for instruction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>UW-Milwaukee campus officials also described $40.7 million in needed renovations to its student union, as a first phase, and a $9 million reconfiguration of the Klotsche Center Annex to provide a more equitable amount of space between recreational use and athletic programs.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the committee recommended the board approve a name change for UW-Barron County to \u201cUW-Eau Claire &#8211; Barron County.\u201d Regent Mike Jones applauded UW-Eau Claire Chancellor James Schmidt for a community-inclusive process of the renaming.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Several construction and renovation projects at UW-Milwaukee, UW-Eau Claire and UW-River Falls on Thursday were recommended for final approval at the board\u2019s Capital Planning and Budget Committee meeting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":836,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":"","uwm_wg_additional_authors":[]},"categories":[174,200],"tags":[],"section":[],"display_categories":[],"related-coverage":[],"uwmnews-feed":[167],"class_list":["post-59630","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news","category-news-in-brief","uwmnews-feed-alumni-association"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.3 (Yoast SEO v27.3) -
