Food serves as a common thread among us, no matter our background. UWM students will have a chance to showcase the many cultures that comprise our community at the UWM International Dessert Competition on April 16.<\/p>\n

This is the fifth anniversary of the event, which allows students to submit homemade desserts from anywhere around the world to be judged by local celebrity judges.<\/p>\n

The public is also welcome to attend, and will be able to sample the desserts. The event will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. at Greene Hall, 3347 N. Downer Ave.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis event is great for the UWM community because it brings people together who would normally not interact,\u201d said Kristin Pitt, associate professor of French, Italian and comparative literature and one of the organizers of the event. \u201cFood is one of the main things that unites people of different cultures and backgrounds, and this event really demonstrates that people are more alike than different.\u201d<\/p>\n

The competition will include both undergrad and graduate students, who will be competing individually or in teams. \u00a0A team of judges, including Jasmine Alinder, interim dean of humanities in the College of Letters and Sciences, and Nancy J. Stohs, food editor at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, will choose the winners.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe really wanted to give students in language and international studies a chance to present the skills that they are learning in their courses in a different way,\u201d said Pitt. \u201cThe competition also enables members of the Milwaukee community to connect with UWM, and gives everyone a chance to experience the diversity that students are presenting.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
