Geoffrey Stone, the Edward H. Levi Distinguished Service Professor of Law at the University of Chicago, will speak about the challenges of free speech on campus. The event will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 7, in the UWM Student Union Ballroom.<\/p>\n

He will address questions of how academic freedom, the First Amendment and freedom of expression apply to higher education. He will also discuss the boundaries of counterprotest and the effects of new University of Wisconsin System regulations.<\/p>\n

Stone is the author of many books on constitutional law and served on former President Barack Obama\u2019s Review Group on Intelligence and Communications Technologies, which evaluated the government\u2019s foreign intelligence surveillance programs in the wake of Edward Snowden\u2019s leaks. He has also written amicus briefs for constitutional scholars in a number of Supreme Court cases.<\/p>\n

This event is sponsored by the Center for 21st<\/sup> Century Studies. It is the second in of a three-part series on regulating speech, sponsored by the Chancellor\u2019s Office. The series\u2019 aim is to ask how speech should be regulated on campus in an era of heightened political tensions and social media attention.<\/p>\n

The final event of the series will be a lecture on \u201cSocial Media and Academic Freedom\u201d on Friday, April 13.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
