She was recognized for her work with dementia patients, particularly for her creation of TimeSlips, which harnesses the power of storytelling to reframe the aging process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnne Basting is transforming the experience of aging and the stigma around dementia and memory loss by empowering older adults and their caregivers with new practices rooted in creative expression and community building,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashoka.org\/en\/fellow\/anne-basting#fellow-accordion\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">her Ashoka citation says<\/a>. \u201cHaving demonstrated the impact at the individual level, her sights are now set on making nursing homes a vital part of the community through art exhibitions, live theater and cultural exchange.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_52446\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-52446\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-52446\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/10\/Basting_250x300-2016_hi-res-download_4-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-52446\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Anne Basting<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ashoka.org\/en\/about-ashoka\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ashoka<\/a> is a worldwide organization founded in 1980 that recognizes social media and other societal changes have empowered people outside the usual seats of authority to change the world. The organization promotes social entrepreneurship, the idea that individuals\u2019 ideas can help correct global problems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAshoka Fellows are the leading social entrepreneurs that Ashoka has recognized for their innovative solutions to social problems and their potential to change patterns across society,\u201d the organization says.<\/p>\n<p>For the first three years of the fellowship, Basting will have access to a stipend to further dedicate herself to her work. She will also have the opportunity to attend Ashoka convocations and connect with other fellows around the world.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, Basting was awarded a MacArthur \u201cgenius\u201d grant, the first
