(UWM Photo\/Troye Fox)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Page, a Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist, asked the panelists to respond to a recent Brookings Institution study that found 51 percent of college students found it acceptable to disrupt a speaker whose speech they found offensive and hurtful \u2013 20% said it was acceptable to use force to silence a speaker.<\/p>\n<p>Rick Esenberg, president of the Wisconsin Institute for Law &amp; Liberty, responded that \u201ccollege is the perfect place to have your suppositions challenged.\u201d But, he said, \u201cFree speech is not an excuse for incivility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Blain Neufeld, UWM associate professor of philosophy, suggested that, while student groups have an undeniable right to invite controversial speakers, they need to exercise that right responsibly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need to situate the university as an association with a particular mission \u2013 it\u2019s not Facebook, it\u2019s not Twitter, it\u2019s not a free-for-all for people to shout whatever they want,\u201d Neufeld said. \u201cA university is an association that\u2019s committed to the structured creation and dissemination of knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudent groups should invite people who are supportive of that mission.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51521\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51521\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-51521\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/09\/freeexp-crowd300x200-20170927_TCF_GIE_T5D0285-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"People sit in chairs watching and listening to the debate. \" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51521\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students and community members listen to the debate.
