Supporters had asked what they could do to help, so Sampson sent a tweet asking men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams from all levels and all sports to send 20 of their school\u2019s T-shirts and shoes to help provide basic clean clothes for people who had lost everything or were living in shelters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thought it would be a great way to contribute to the hurricane relief efforts while coming together with the rest of the basketball community,\u201d said Kira Carter, assistant coach of UWM\u2019s women\u2019s team.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"und\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/HoustonStrong?src=hash\">#HoustonStrong<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/ForTheCity?src=hash\">#ForTheCity<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/GoCoogs?src=hash\">#GoCoogs<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/aAlkkcNqnE\">pic.twitter.com\/aAlkkcNqnE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Coach Kelvin Sampson (@CoachSampsonUH) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CoachSampsonUH\/status\/902277271800688644\">August 28, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>The UWM staff gathered T-shirts and sweats, with some help from the ticket sales department, and shipped a package off to the University of Houston.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has been cool to see how many different teams from all levels and even different sports have contributed to the cause,\u201d said Carter. \u201cDonating a box of shirts is a small act, but when you have 900 different groups contributing to the same cause, it can help a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As of Monday, Sampson had received more than 1,300 commitments for donations from the Twitter feed alone. Volunteer students, staff and athletes at the University of Houston are sorting and sharing the items.<\/p>\n<p>The response has been so overwhelming that Sampson posted an update saying the university staff had reached its capacity to effectively distribute the donations. He requested that future contributions be directed to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.redcross.org\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Red Cross<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/ghcf.org\/hurricane-relief\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund<\/a> administered by the Greater Houston Community
