MILWAUKEE _ The Masters in Human Resources and Labor Relations program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee will honor the Milwaukee Bucks and the Alliance for Good Jobs with its 2017 Melvin Lurie Memorial Prize for Labor-Management Cooperation.<\/p>\n
The Bucks and the Alliance for Good Jobs will receive the prize for negotiating an innovative community benefits agreement that covers not just construction but permanent jobs in housekeeping, landscaping and food service. The agreement also stipulates that workers will be paid $15 per hour by 2023, requires at least half of the workers to be hired from neighborhoods with high unemployment, and affirms workers\u2019 right to form unions.<\/p>\n
The Alliance for Good Jobs is a network of business and community leaders formed to advocate for family-sustaining jobs related to the construction and ongoing use of a new Bucks arena and in the surrounding downtown area.<\/p>\n
Honorees will receive their award at Oct. 2 ceremony at UWM\u2019s Hefter Center. Also at that ceremony, an exemplary student from the master\u2019s program will receive the Melvin Lurie Memorial Prize for academic excellence.<\/p>\n
The late Melvin Lurie was a professor of economics at UWM and founder of the master\u2019s program. The prize honors his vision of cooperative relationships between labor and management.<\/p>\n
