It\u2019s a fact: A church musician since age 8, Robinson can play tenor and soprano saxophone, percussion, trumpet, cornet, bass guitar and piano.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n

Nick Robinson was the kind of kid who constantly drew, filling his notebooks with cartoon characters or whatever else caught his interest. When an architect came to visit his third- or fourth-grade classroom on career day, Robinson was blown away: \u201cHe gets paid to draw!\u201d<\/p>\n

Right then he decided he too would become an architect. By the time he was a senior in high school, he was already interning at Uihlein\/Wilson Architects in downtown Milwaukee.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s so dynamic,\u201d Robinson says of his chosen career. \u201cYou can really shape the way people live and interact with architecture, and that\u2019s very fascinating.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fortunately, Robinson didn\u2019t have to go far to start his own training. He first earned his bachelor\u2019s in Architectural Studies from UWM\u2019s School of Architecture & Urban Planning \u2013 on a full-tuition scholarship as a Morgridge Scholar \u2013 and then stayed on to earn his master\u2019s degree.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s grateful for the incredible experiences he\u2019s had at UWM. As a McNair Scholar, he worked with Professor Mike Utzinger to study the city\u2019s heat island effect and the water retention of the Urban Ecology Center\u2019s green roof.<\/p>\n

He also studied abroad for three months in France and Spain. \u201cParis is a freaking playground for architecture. Even their apartment buildings look like something you\u2019d take a picture of,\u201d Robinson enthuses. Last semester, he went with Associate Professor Gil Snyder to tour Boston\u2019s architecture.<\/p>\n

But the past six years have also been a lot of hard work. \u201cI\u2019m most proud of never giving myself an option to fail,\u201d Robinson says. He\u2019ll never forget sitting in one of his sophomore studio courses. He only planned to work for a few hours, but then his cell phone alarm went off, signaling it was 6 a.m. \u2013 and he had to go to work at 8 a.m.<\/p>\n

Staying up for 36 or 48 hours straight around finals time because he was so immersed in a project wasn\u2019t unusual. \u201cThe thing with architecture is you\u2019re never finished,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, he has continued to intern at Uihlein\/Wilson, which is partly owned by UWM alums Del Wilson (\u201977) and Scott Ramlow (\u201990,\u201992). Robinson started by updating product binders, but once his employers learned he knew the AutoCAD software, he was soon updating schematic designs. \u201cWho gets to do that when they\u2019re fresh out of high school?,\u201d Robinson asks in wonder.<\/p>\n

And now? \u201cI\u2019m doing a lot of things that actual licensed architects do,\u201d he says. That includes working on construction documents, getting trained on specifications and helping present to potential clients.<\/p>\n

\u201cNick is hardworking, highly intelligent, creative and empathetic,\u201d Ramlow says. \u201cThe first three qualities will make Nick a good architect, but it is his empathy that has, and will, continue to make him successful.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s evident in Robinson\u2019s commitment to giving back to the community. For the past six years, he has volunteered for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee, and he and his \u201clittle brother\u201d recently won the organization\u2019s Match of the Year award. \u201cNow my \u2018little\u2019 is interested in becoming an architect,\u201d Robinson says with a smile.<\/p>\n

After graduation Robinson hopes to stay on at Uihlein\/Wilson. His ultimate dream: To one day own his own firm and to teach part time. So perhaps UWM hasn\u2019t seen the last of him.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
