The Institute for Urban Education set to hold its fourth annual professional development conference at the UWM School of Continuing Education, 161 W. Wisconsin Ave., Thursday, Aug. 10.<\/p>\n

Keynote speaker is Tyrone Howard, professor in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies at UCLA. Howard\u2019s research examines culture, race, teaching and learning. He is also associate dean for equity, diversity and inclusion at UCLA.<\/p>\n

Tyrone Howard<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

A former classroom teacher in the Compton Unified School District, Howard\u2019s work focuses on the experiences of black males and other males of color in elementary and high schools. He is the author of several best-selling books as well as numerous journal articles. In 2015, he received the UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award. In 2016 Education Week named him one of 50 most influential scholars in the nation informing educational policy, practice and reform.<\/p>\n

The Institute for Urban Education is a UW System initiative to provide classroom experience in Milwaukee Public Schools to future teachers in colleges and universities within the System. It is housed at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The IUE also provides professional development opportunities for practicing teachers in urban classrooms and collaborates with scholars from the UW System institutions to support research in urban education.<\/p>\n

The theme of this year\u2019s conference is Families First: Building School and Family Partnerships in Urban Settings. The conference designed cooperating teachers who host student teachers in their classrooms will also look at issues around culturally responsive teaching.<\/p>\n
