Liam Callanan<\/a>, associate professor of English at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, has been named the 2017 recipient of\u00a0The George W. Hunt, S.J., Prize for Excellence in Journalism, Arts & Letters<\/a>. The 2017 Hunt Prize<\/a>, which seeks to recognize the finest literary work of Roman Catholic intelligence and imagination, is awarded this year in the category fiction and drama.<\/p>\n

Liam Callanan<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Callanan will be awarded the $25,000 prize at a ceremony Sept.\u00a021 at the Yale Club in New York City.\u00a0In addition to the monetary prize, he will also deliver an original piece at the ceremony that will then serve as the cover story of\u00a0America\u00a0<\/strong>magazine in an ensuing issue.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis prize is awarded in part to recognize future promise,\u201d said the Rev. Robert Beloin, chaplain of Saint Thomas More Chapel & Center at Yale University, \u201cand in the case of Liam, we have no doubt that there is still so much more to come.\u201d<\/p>\n

Callanan has been a member of the English Department faculty since 2005. Prior to that he taught at George Mason University and Georgetown University. He is also a member of the faculty of the M.F.A. Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, N.C.<\/p>\n

The George W. Hunt, S.J. Prize is co-sponsored by Saint Thomas More Chapel & Center at Yale University and America Media.<\/p>\n
