This June, the program added 20 participants to its growing cadre of alumni.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48686\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48686\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-48686 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/06\/2017-ACRE-grad-Class300x200-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Students and teachers pose for a photo.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-48686\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 2017 ACRE graduating class and partners<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Carolyn Esswein, director of Community Design Solutions and an urban studies professor of practice in UWM\u2019s School of Architecture and Urban Planning, has been an instructor with the program since 2014, outlining the process she follows for neighborhood development projects.\u00a0 At the end of this year, Community Design Solutions assisted ACRE teams by providing renderings of their redevelopment proposals.<\/p>\n<p>Esswein, who has also served as a member of the ACRE advisory board, says the program has had a significant impact.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_48688\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48688\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-48688 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2017\/06\/C-Esswein-250x300-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-48688\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carolyn Esswein<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe program has been successful in its education mission,\u201d she said, \u201cbut at least as important is the network that has evolved. Students have access to successful developers in the city and region, so that offers new opportunities for collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFour alderpersons have gone through, developers have come through,\u201d Esswein added. \u201cAnd in fact alumni are now coming back as instructors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ACRE is administered by the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, <a href=\"http:\/\/programs.lisc.org\/milwaukee\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">LISC Milwaukee<\/a>, in partnership with Marquette University, the Milwaukee School of Engineering, and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s good that UWM is at the table,\u201d Esswein said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since 2005, Associates in Commercial Real Estate, or ACRE, has been working to expand minority representation in the commercial real estate fields of development, property management, and construction management.
