the fire forced theater students and faculty<\/a> to adapt quickly. The set was destroyed, so it had to be redesigned and rebuilt. The cast \u2013 which never skipped a rehearsal \u2013 had to adjust to a new set and stage.<\/p>\nAssistant professor of theater Christopher Guse, Arcadia\u2019s technical director, is impressed with how quickly the set came together at Shorewood High School, which offered the use of its facilities.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen we redesigned the show, we went for something that was manageable in a short time frame,\u201d Guse said. \u201cAnd these guys were out of control the last few days. Terrific work, really speedy and really efficient.\u201d<\/p>\n
Added Dennis Kavanagh, the theater department\u2019s shop supervisor: \u201cWe actually made zero mistakes, which is really unusual.\u201d<\/p>\n
And in less than two weeks, the set was ready to be moved to the Stiemke Studio at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater. The set was moved Friday afternoon, April 21, to the Kenilworth building for painting, and then to the Rep.<\/p>\n
Senior Jonathan Dean, the show\u2019s master carpenter, attributed the quick progress to the focused release of pent-up energy.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe hardest part of the experience as the first few days when we saw the destruction but weren\u2019t able to do anything about it,\u201d Dean said. \u201cThat first Monday (April 10) I thought, I have tools in my basement, I\u2019ll set up in my garage and we\u2019ll start building scenery.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s always been a resolute attitude about this.\u201d<\/p>\n
Amid the enthusiasm and determination, there is still grief at the loss of a \u201chome away from home.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe spend more time in that building that we do at our houses,\u201d said Ben Lisowski, a member of the scene crew. \u201cWe used to have a green room, and studio spaces, and now there\u2019s nothing.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know people who\u2019ve had a half hour to spare and they\u2019ve just walked around campus, because they don\u2019t know what to do with themselves.<\/p>\n
Junior Brooke Olson, stage manager for \u201cArcadia,\u201d felt a sense of loss of the Mainstage Theatre.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere were a lot of tears,\u201d Olson said. \u201cThat was where met all my friends, that\u2019s where I learned my craft. It was where I was ready to stage manage my first show on the mainstage, and it was gone.\u201d<\/p>\n
The actors were spared disruption since their rehearsals were being held in Mitchell Hall.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was reassuring that even though we\u2019d lost our shop, we could still do our craft,\u201d Olson said. \u201cAnd when we heard we were moving to the Rep \u2013 oh my God!\u201d<\/p>\n
While students are still absorbing the experience, there\u2019s already a recognition that this is a special time in their academic careers.<\/p>\n
Lisowski and fellow crew member sophomore Ben de Guzman wryly noted one benefit of the experience. At a class on career preparation, students were given a short list of the most important interview questions.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think we\u2019re pretty good on \u2018What\u2019s the biggest challenge you\u2019ve overcome?\u2019\u201d Lisowski said.<\/p>\n
