Hosted by the Education Deans of Greater Milwaukee, the annual teaching competition recognizes educators who find innovative, impactful ways to integrate STEM concepts into their curriculum.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_39535\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-39535\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-39535 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2016\/10\/teaching-award300x200-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"teaching-award300x200\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-39535\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hope Longwell-Grice (left), UWM School of Education associate dean, and Robert Longwell-Grice (right), senior adviser, attended the teachers award ceremony in support of the 10 UWM alumni nominated for teaching awards, including Distinguished Educator of the Year runner-up Craig Machut (second from left).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Twenty-three Milwaukee-area K-12 teachers were nominated across three categories: early career, advanced career and distinguished educator of the year; three winners were selected. Runner up in the 2016 Distinguished Educator of the Year category was UWM alum and Rufus King International High School teacher Craig Machut, nominated for being an \u201cexemplary teacher and mentor who pushes students to achieve at the highest level.\u201d Through robotics projects and greenhouses blooming in the corner of his classrooms, Machut helps students develop a deep understanding of the STEM content and encourages them to post creative reflections on what they\u2019ve learned, according to his nominator.<\/p>\n<p>A team of leading education administrators, nonprofit directors and education advocates served as 2016 judges.
