{"id":38797,"date":"2016-10-04T11:21:46","date_gmt":"2016-10-04T16:21:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=38797"},"modified":"2016-10-04T11:21:46","modified_gmt":"2016-10-04T16:21:46","slug":"freshwater-sciences-hosting-public-conversation-great-lakes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/freshwater-sciences-hosting-public-conversation-great-lakes\/","title":{"rendered":"Freshwater Sciences hosting public conversation on Great Lakes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The School of Freshwater Sciences is hosting the International Joint Commission on Oct. 18 for a public meeting to evaluate the commission\u2019s progress on accomplishing the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement\u2019s goals and objectives.<\/p>\n<p>The public conversation, \u201cGreat Lakes Successes and Challenges: What is a Healthy Lake Michigan to You?\u201d will be held from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at the UWM School of Freshwater Sciences, 600 E. Greenfield Ave., Milwaukee, WI 53204.<\/p>\n<p>The public is invited to learn more about local efforts for water quality management and to talk with the commission and regional water scientists, advocates and policymakers about the successes and challenges for the Milwaukee watershed and for the Great Lakes.<\/p>\n<p>The commission is also seeking comment from local residents on progress to restore and protect the water quality in the lakes. Topics will include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>What government programs are working, and which ones are not?<\/li>\n<li>Does their progress report tell you what you want to know?<\/li>\n<li>What issues do you feel are most pressing for the Great Lakes \u2013 in your area and the entire watershed \u2013 and what additional actions are needed?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ijc.org\/en_\/\" target=\"_blank\">International Joint Commission<\/a>, created by the Boundary Waters Treaty signed by Canada and the United States in 1909, oversees water issues involving the two countries.<\/p>\n<p>For more information and to register, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/go.uwm.edu\/2dGYqit\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/go.uwm.edu\/2dGYqit<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The School of Freshwater Sciences is hosting the International Joint Commission on Oct. 18 for a public meeting to evaluate the commission\u2019s progress on accomplishing the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement\u2019s goals and objectives.
