She received a five-year, $1.8 million grant for her research entitled, \u201cMechanisms underlying memory regulation by 17beta-estradiol, canonical Wnt signaling, and BDNF in male and female mice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/people.uwm.edu\/frickk\/research\/\" target=\"_blank\">Frick\u2019s laboratory<\/a> uses mice and rats to examine questions about memory formation where the effects of aging, hormones, and environmental stimulation are similar to those in humans.<\/p>\n<p>Fred Helmstetter, a professor of psychology, also received a five-year, $1.8 million grant for his research entitled, \u201cSystems and molecular mechanisms of retrieval-dependent memory destabilization.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38741\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38741\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-38741 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2016\/10\/Fred-Helmstetter_f_1250x300-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"fred-helmstetter_f_1250x300\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38741\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fred Helmstetter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The work of <a href=\"http:\/\/people.uwm.edu\/fjh\/research\/\" target=\"_blank\">Helmstetter\u2019s lab<\/a> is aimed at understanding the fundamental mechanisms of neural systems underlying complex psychological phenomena such as perception, learning, memory and emotion.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two neuroscientists at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee have received grants from the National Institute of Mental Health to support research into memory.
