{"id":30097,"date":"2016-03-01T11:45:39","date_gmt":"2016-03-01T17:45:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=30097"},"modified":"2016-03-02T11:38:01","modified_gmt":"2016-03-02T17:38:01","slug":"fast-radio-burst-discovery-finds-missing-matter-in-universe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/fast-radio-burst-discovery-finds-missing-matter-in-universe\/","title":{"rendered":"UWM astronomer helps identify a new cosmic searchlight"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When astronomers located and identified the source of a fast radio burst, or FRB, they became able to employ the distinctive characteristics of the signal measure the material lying between the object and Earth.<\/p>\n<p>David Kaplan, an astronomer at UW-Milwaukee, is a member of the team that searched through data from other telescopes and also helped interpret the data to form a more comprehensive picture of this mysterious event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been able to locate the object and determine its distance \u2013 several billion light years away,\u201d Kaplan said. \u201cThat\u2019s important because the nature of the radio signals from FRBs indicate how much material they\u2019ve gone through.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30098\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30098\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-30098\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2016\/03\/FRB_b.jpg\" alt=\"On the right are successive views of where the FRB signal came from, including the FRB galaxy at bottom right. Instead, it lies between them in the \u2018intergalactic medium.\u2019 Knowing the distance to this object lets us take a \u2018census\u2019 of the intergalactic medium in a way that hasn\u2019t been possible before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Locating the object required an international alert system that brought several telescopes into play around the world. Prior to this discovery, the FRBs faded before their sources could precisely located.<\/p>\n<p>Astronomers expect to begin finding many more of these objects, revealing both their true nature and employing them for further examination of the matter in the space between galaxies, where the vast majority of the matter in the universe resides.<\/p>\n<p>The team&#8217;s work was published in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nature.com\/nature\/journal\/v530\/n7591\/full\/nature17140.html\">Feb. 25, 2016, issue of Nature<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When astronomers located and identified the source of a fast radio burst, or FRB, they became able to employ the distinctive characteristics of the signal measure the material lying between the object and Earth.
