Michael Steele, associate professor and department chair in the School of Education\u2019s Department of Curriculum and Instruction, was recently elected to a three-year term on the board of directors of the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE).<\/p>\n

He joins President-Elect Randolph A. Phillipp (San Diego State University) and Treasurer Anita A. Wager (UW-Madison) as new leaders to be installed at AMTE\u2019s Annual Meeting in January.<\/p>\n

A former secondary mathematics and science teacher, Steele came to UWM in 2013, after teaching at Michigan State University for seven years. His work focuses on supporting secondary mathematics teachers in developing the mathematical knowledge needed for teaching and implementing research-based effective instructional practices in their classrooms.<\/p>\n

AMTE is the largest professional organization devoted to the improvement of mathematics teacher education \u2013 it includes more than 1,000 members devoted to the preservice education and professional development of K-12 teachers of mathematics. UWM Professor Emeritus Henry Kepner served as the president of this organization during its formative years from 1993-1995.<\/p>\n
