Uk Heo,\u00a0UWM distinguished professor of Political Science, received an award\u00a0from the Korean Minister of Education for his\u00a0book,\u00a0\u201cSouth Korea\u2019s Rise: Economic Development, Power, and Foreign Relations\u00a0(Cambridge University Press, 2014),\u201d and for research contributions to Korean studies. Heo\u2019s\u00a0book was selected as one of the outstanding research products funded by the Korean government.<\/p>\n
C\u00e9sar Ferreira, department of Spanish and Portuguese and affiliate of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies, was elected to the Peruvian Academy of Language (Academia Peruana de la Lengua<\/em>), an institution founded in the\u00a019th century and charged with promoting Peruvian literature, linguistics and culture. Ferreira specializes in contemporary Peruvian letters and joins some 60 Peruvian academics in what is a lifetime appointment.<\/p>\n Karen Parrish Baker was appointed as the director of the federally funded Student Support Services Program in October. Baker has extensive experience as a former program director for Student Support Services and years of evaluating multiple TRIO program proposals for the U.S. Department of Education. Because she is a first-generation college graduate from a low-income family, she has overcome the types of barriers faced by project-eligible students.<\/p>\n Scott J. Strath, Kinesiology, was named director of the UWM Center for Aging and Translational Research. Strath served as the founding interim director for the center since 2013, and has been pivotal to the growth of its mission to synergize campus on the topic of aging, and escalate education, research, and community translation to benefit an aging society.<\/p>\n Laura Pedrick, Academic Affairs, was elected to serve on the Executive Council of WCET, a national organization focused on\u00a0advancing excellence in technology-enhanced teaching and learning in higher education.<\/p>\n Phyllis King, Academic Affairs and College of Health Sciences, was named a Fellow in the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions,\u00a0acknowledging\u00a0her important contributions to this organization and her many efforts to promote excellence in teaching, research, service and leadership in allied health.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Andrew J.
