{"id":24110,"date":"2015-11-12T14:25:14","date_gmt":"2015-11-12T20:25:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=24110"},"modified":"2016-02-29T08:45:28","modified_gmt":"2016-02-29T14:45:28","slug":"uwm-students-made-a-difference-on-make-a-difference-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/uwm-students-made-a-difference-on-make-a-difference-day\/","title":{"rendered":"UWM students make a difference on Make a Difference Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some students may spend weekends sleeping in, but more than 500 UWM students, alumni and staff spent Saturday in the citywide Make a Difference Day.<\/p>\n<p>UWM\u2019s Center for Community-Based Learning, Leadership, and Research organized the event, formerly known as RAK-athon; the name was changed to match the city\u2019s name of the event.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_24114\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24114\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/makedifference_h.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24114 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/makedifference_h.jpg\" alt=\"Students visit with a homeowner after their work is done. (UWM Photo)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Students and community members cleaned up city neighborhoods and helped with the basic winterization of homes of older adults who needed assistance with raking leaves, clearing garden beds, washing windows and picking up trash.<\/p>\n<p>Nicole Glaser, director of community-based learning at the UWM center, said volunteers worked at more than 100 homes in Milwaukee neighborhoods, including Harambee, Sherman Park and Riverwest.<\/p>\n<p>The UWM students not only helped with yard work, but many spent time visiting with the homeowners and learned about their lives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne gentleman called our office after his volunteers left to say that he really appreciated the help he received,\u201d Glaser said. \u201cHe also said that he enjoyed the company and energy of the volunteers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More than 100 students helped in East Side neighborhoods near campus, coordinated by UWM\u2019s office of Neighborhood Housing.<\/p>\n<p>UWM was the host of the citywide kickoff on Saturday.
