Milwaukee’s Silver Spring Neighborhood Center.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Milwaukee will receive a $30 million federal grant to help redevelop Westlawn public housing and surrounding areas \u2013 a neighborhood that is a long-time focus of UWM\u2019s College of Nursing.<\/p>\n

Milwaukee is one of five cities to receive the U.S. Housing and Urban Development grant money, in a plan to redevelop 708 mixed-income housing units on the city\u2019s northwest side.<\/p>\n

The College of Nursing is one of the community partners heavily involved in promoting health care in the area. The college has collaborated with the Silver Spring Neighborhood Center since 1987, providing primary care services that include a walk-in clinic, staffed by nurse practitioners, nurse clinicians and nursing students.<\/p>\n

In addition, the college is the coordinator of the Westlawn Partnership for a Healthier Environment through an agreement with the EPA. This partnership is working to improve air quality in the neighborhood in order to reduce asthma triggers. Activities include the Healthy Homes and Healthy Day Cares programs, as well as a bicycling program.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
