{"id":20593,"date":"2015-09-24T09:38:53","date_gmt":"2015-09-24T14:38:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=20593"},"modified":"2016-02-04T12:34:27","modified_gmt":"2016-02-04T18:34:27","slug":"11-student-and-alumni-businesses-started-with-help-from-uwm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/11-student-and-alumni-businesses-started-with-help-from-uwm\/","title":{"rendered":"11 student and alumni businesses started with help from UWM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Think of it as UWM\u2019s version of the TV show \u201cShark Tank.\u201d More than 200 students have participated in entrepreneurial programs collectively called the UWM Ideas Challenge, and the winners of campus competitions have gone on to attract $160,000 in additional investment from other sources.<\/p>\n<p>Programs such as the La Macchia New Venture Business Plan Competition, Student Startup Challenge and James D. Scheinfeld Entrepreneurial Awards Competition help UWM students and recent alumni hone their ideas so they can get support from programs such as the Ideadvance Seed Fund, established by the UW-Extension and the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation.<\/p>\n<p>Entrepreneurial activities at UWM are sure to grow with a recent $10 million donation from Milwaukee philanthropists Sheldon and Marianne Lubar to create an entrepreneurship center that will bring together students and faculty members interested in innovation and help them develop the skills to be successful.<\/p>\n<p>As UWM celebrates that gift, here\u2019s a look at 11 businesses already launched by students and alumni.<\/p>\n<h2>DG1 Technologies<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22887\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22887\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.DG1Tech_d.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22887 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.DG1Tech_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.DG1Tech_d.jpg 750w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.DG1Tech_d-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22887\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">David Gallegos (left) enlisted the help of undergraduate Guilherme Bracks to build his product prototype, a winner in the Student Startup Challenge.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Tired of repetitive tasks, David Gallegos found a better way to accomplish a chore required in nearly every life sciences lab. After winning the Student Startup Challenge in 2014, the graduate student in Health Sciences began building a device that automates the mixing of liquids needed in biological experiments.<\/p>\n<p>Students enrolled in an engineering course helped him improve the prototype, and in less than a year, he had won additional funding through Ideadvance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat award allowed our team to host a booth at the world\u2019s largest immunology conference, where we made many contacts,\u201d Gallegos said.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s now drumming up pre-orders and already has contracted to build a device for St. Jude\u2019s Children\u2019s Hospital in Memphis and the University of Massachusetts Medical School.<\/p>\n<h2>Orchard Street Press<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22884\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22884\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/OrchardPress.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22884 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/OrchardPress.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/OrchardPress.jpg 750w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/OrchardPress-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22884\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Julie and Whitney Teska started their silk screen T-shirt company after they won the first La Macchia New Ventures Business Plan Competition in 2008.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Julie and Whitney Teska had just finished journalism and history degrees, respectively, and had next to no business training when they became the first winners of the New Venture competition funded through a gift from Milwaukee businessman Bill La Macchia.<\/p>\n<p>Yet the pair, who launched a silk-screen T-shirt printing company, Orchard Street Press, are still in business and thriving. They used their $8,000 winnings from the 2008 New Venture competition to buy equipment and started mostly producing T-shirts for local bands. They now supply a range of silk-screened apparel for bars, restaurants, nonprofit groups and other businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Started in the basement of the Teskas\u2019 home, Orchard Street Press just moved to an 11,000 square-foot St. Francis location and has 10 employees.<\/p>\n<h2>Tech Goggles<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22883\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22883\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.TechGogg_d.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22883 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.TechGogg_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.TechGogg_d.jpg 750w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.TechGogg_d-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22883\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Alumna Erika Pliner designed a device that swimmers attached to their goggles that allows someone poolside to communicate with the athlete while they are swimming.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As a Panthers swimmer during her undergraduate years, Erika Pliner was frustrated that her coach could not give her feedback on her stroke while she was in the pool. The information could have greatly improved her time.<\/p>\n<p>So when the recent engineering grad had to create a product for a class, she designed a goggles attachment that provides wireless, one-way communication in real time. The attachment uses colored lights with predetermined meanings to convey signals to swimmers.<\/p>\n<p>Pliner and partner Lu Han, who met when Pliner won the Student Startup Challenge, hope to pitch the product this fall to a company specializing in swimwear and technology.<\/p>\n<h2>Kallows, Inc.<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22888\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22888\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.Kallows_d.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22888 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.Kallows_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.Kallows_d.jpg 750w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.Kallows_d-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22888\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gajanan Nagarsekar and Kevin Kreger started Kallows, Inc. after winning the La Macchia New Ventures Business Plan Competititon in 2011.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Engineering alumni Kevin Kreger and Gajanan Nagarsekar won the New Venture competition in 2011 and applied their $7,500 winnings to the development of a device that helps users track their heart rate and other health data on their smart phones and transmit that information to a doctor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also prototyped a sports model, and it was used in some marathons on runners who were post-operative cardiac patients,\u201d Kreger.<\/p>\n<p>Their company, Kallows, Inc., moved its operations in 2012 to India, where it recently won the India Innovation Growth Program, supported by Lockheed Martin and the Indian government.<\/p>\n<h2>Tali Payments<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22889\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22889\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.Tali_d.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22889 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.Tali_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.Tali_d.jpg 750w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.Tali_d-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22889\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carlton Reeves is launching Tali Payments after winning two business plan competitions at UWM.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Carlton Reeves won two business plan competitions at UWM with his idea for a cloud-based mobile payment service and then went on to place in the Top 10 in the MillerCoors Urban Entrepreneur Series, a national business plan competition.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, he has honed the service, called Tali Payments, and recently won a round of seed funding through Ideadvance.<\/p>\n<p>Reeves has used his experience to help multiple student and faculty entrepreneurs at UWM. This summer, he served an internship in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.<\/p>\n<h2>Race Torch LLC<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22890\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22890\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.RaceTorch_d.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22890 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.RaceTorch_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.RaceTorch_d.jpg 750w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.RaceTorch_d-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22890\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adam Wickersham invented a quieter, cheaper tool to start track competitions.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Adam Wickersham has served as referee for high school and college track meets for more than a decade. Fed up with using expensive, loud firearms to signal the start of events, he developed a device that would save money and his hearing.<\/p>\n<p>Working in his garage, Wickersham, a 2013 graduate of UWM\u2019s Executive MBA program, created a less costly \u201crace torch\u201d that emits a tone and flash of light.<\/p>\n<p>It earned him support from the Student Startup Challenge, which enlisted students enrolled in a product realization course to help hone the torch. Wickersham now has two versions of the torch, both of which will be on the market by November.<\/p>\n<h2>MyCombine<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22886\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22886\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.MyCombine_d.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22886 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.MyCombine_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.MyCombine_d.jpg 750w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.MyCombine_d-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22886\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Justin Bohler, (left) of MyCombine, helps an athlete track his progress online.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jeremy Tiedt, Justin Bohler and Brandon Tschacher, all UWM alums, modeled their athletic performance product on the National Football League\u2019s Combine \u2013 a series of tests given to players before the draft to get a snapshot of the athletes\u2019 range of abilities.<\/p>\n<p>MyCombine provides advanced testing and analytics for athletes of any age or stage of development. Using professional testing equipment and an interactive online database, users can quantify their athletic achievement, compare themselves to other users and measure the effectiveness of their workouts.<\/p>\n<p>The MyCombine team swept all three UWM entrepreneurial competitions in the past year, garnering nearly $20,000 in hard-to-find early seed funding.<\/p>\n<h2>Organic Research Corp.<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22891\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22891\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.OrganicRes_d.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22891 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.OrganicRes_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.OrganicRes_d.jpg 750w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.OrganicRes_d-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22891\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Engineering alumnus Scott Vanderbeck established a startup company after his research experience as a UWM graduate student. Organic Research Corp. is selling a biopsy analysis tool that identifies a common liver disease.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Scott Vanderbeck was a graduate student in computer science when he worked with a UWM faculty member and Medical College of Wisconsin doctor to develop software that can detect and diagnose non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, a condition\u202fthat affects nearly one in three Americans.<\/p>\n<p>The software he created became the first product from the startup company Organic Research Corp., which was a finalist in last year\u2019s Wisconsin Governor\u2019s\u202fBusiness Plan Contest and garnered two grants through Ideadvance.<\/p>\n<p>The potential market for software to diagnose disease is huge, said Vanderbeck, whose company is working with some of the nation\u2019s largest research laboratories as it expands its offerings.<\/p>\n<h2>Red Sky Tek LLC<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22892\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22892\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Red.Sky_.Tek_d.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22892 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Red.Sky_.Tek_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Red.Sky_.Tek_d.jpg 750w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Red.Sky_.Tek_d-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22892\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dustin Hahn and alumna Nicole Green created a mobile app that helps families coordinate shared care of a loved one.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Coordinating care for her grandmother in assisted living caused havoc in Nicole Green\u2019s family. To solve the communication problems, the Peck School of the Arts alum came up with an idea for a mobile app that would give all the relatives the information they needed.<\/p>\n<p>The idea earned her support from the Student Startup Challenge, which helped her create an app called Ginkgo.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, Green and partner Dustin Hahn have formed Red Sky Tek, a small\u202fdesign and tech firm that helps people who want to launch their own startups. The company is earning an income while the pair perfects the Ginkgo prototype and prepares to compete for funding from Ideadvance.<\/p>\n<h2>US Combat Sports<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22893\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22893\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.USCombat_d.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22893 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.USCombat_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.USCombat_d.jpg 750w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.USCombat_d-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22893\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gabe Wahhab&#8217;s last startup company was bought by his present employer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Gabe Wahhab had been a freelance website developer for years before he won $3,000 in the New Venture competition in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>Wahhab, who founded the UWM wrestling club while a computer science student here, used his winnings to launch an online portal for the local martial arts communities called US Combat Sports. The site co-produced with UWM business alum Luke Summerfield was successful, but Wahhab eventually shut it down to focus his website development business called Savvy Panda<\/p>\n<p>Savvy Panda had nine employees, including Summerfield, when Square 2 Marketing, a leading inbound marketing company and Wahhab\u2019s current employer, bought it 10 months ago.<\/p>\n<h2>Isopoint Technologies LLC<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22894\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22894\" style=\"width: 750px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.Isopoint_d.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22894 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.Isopoint_d.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.Isopoint_d.jpg 750w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/Biz.Isopoint_d-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22894\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Doctoral student Alex Francis has started Isopoint Technologies LLC around a product he is marketing called E-Trap.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Engineering graduate student Alex Francis was taking a class in entrepreneurship when he learned about a research tool that he believed had commercial potential.<\/p>\n<p>With permission from the inventor, UWM chemist Jorg Woehl, Francis won funding from the Student Startup Challenge to improve Woehl\u2019s prototype of an electrostatic\u202f\u201ctrap\u201d that isolates a single nanoparticle so it can be analyzed through a microscope.<\/p>\n<p>More backing came from the New Venture competition, Ideadvance and a Catalyst seed grant that Woehl received from the UWM Research Foundation.
