Want to learn some self-defense? How to do CPR? Stay safe in your neighborhood?<\/p>\n

UWM\u2019s annual Campus Safety Week gives the university community the opportunity to learn more about how to stay safe on and off campus.<\/p>\n

Safety Week\u2019s main event will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 21, in the Union concourse and Spaights Plaza. The UWM Police Department will provide information and demonstrations on self-defense, bike safety and the use of automated external defibrillators. The UWM Safe Walkers, students trained to help patrol adjacent neighborhoods, will discuss their work and recruit additional students for these paid positions.<\/p>\n

UWM’s bike officers patrol the campus area throughout most of the year. About half of the university’s police officers are trained bikers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

\u201cOur theme this year is \u2018A Proud Panther is a Safe Panther: Be Alert, Be Aware, Be Responsible,\u2019\u201d said Theron Rogers, Jr., the community liaison police officer who led the team organizing the event. \u201cWe want to encourage students to learn how to help themselves and their friends and fellow students avoid potentially harmful situations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Along with the police department, groups who will be providing information about campus safety at the Sept. 21 event include the Women\u2019s Resource Center, Norris Health Center, Safety & Assurance, B.O.S.S. (Be on the Safe Side vans), Dean of Students Office, the LGBT Center, the Military and Veterans Resource Center, the Neighborhood Housing Office and University Information and Technology Services. Milwaukee and Shorewood police departments and Milwaukee Fire Department also will attend.<\/p>\n

Other events throughout the week will include active-shooter training, a defibrillators course and two self-defense training courses. University Police Department officers will visit residence halls to discuss safety issues, alcohol awareness and the resources and services the department offers.
