UWM education professor Kalyani Rai visits her native Nepal often, but her most recent trip carried additional significance as she presented the nation\u2019s prime minister with $60,000 raised in Milwaukee for earthquake relief.<\/p>\n

Rai met with Sushil Koirala on July 17, asking the prime minister for assurances that the money \u2013 raised through the non-profit Milwaukee Nepali Pariwar \u2013 would be used in the rebuilding of schools in three remote villages in the eastern part of the country. The April 25, 7.8 magnitude earthquake killed 9,000 people and left hundreds of thousands homeless.<\/p>\n

\u201cI also expressed an interest to continue to support these schools in the future through a collaboration between the people of Nepal and the people of Milwaukee,\u201d Rai said.<\/p>\n

During her stay, Rai was interviewed on Radio Nepal about the Milwaukee Nepalese community\u2019s earthquake relief efforts as well as her work at UWM.<\/p>\n
