{"id":18657,"date":"2015-05-20T21:29:44","date_gmt":"2015-05-21T02:29:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=18657"},"modified":"2015-11-12T08:06:23","modified_gmt":"2015-11-12T14:06:23","slug":"one-of-uwms-own-lays-down-the-slaw-on-tonights-masterchef-premiere","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/one-of-uwms-own-lays-down-the-slaw-on-tonights-masterchef-premiere\/","title":{"rendered":"One of UWM\u2019s own lays down the slaw on tonight\u2019s \u2018MasterChef\u2019 premiere"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><em><span style=\"color: #0000ff\">Update:<\/span> Kozar\u2019s pan-seared salmon dish wows \u2018MasterChef\u2019 judges<\/em><\/h4>\n<h5>Katrina Kozar, UWM\u2019s \u201cMasterChef\u201d contestant, passed her first test Wednesday on Fox 6, and will return at 7 p.m. next Wednesday for the second round of cooking competition.<\/h5>\n<h5>Kozar had 30 minutes to prepare her \u201csignature dish\u201d \u2013 pan-seared salmon with panang curry sauce, rice and peas and slaw \u2013 and present it to three celebrity chef judges, including host Gordon Ramsay. In direct competition with Milwaukee resident Taylor Moore, Kozar received a \u201cMasterChef\u201d apron, and the right to join some 20 other home cooks next week.<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2015\/05\/MasterChef.Katrina-Kozar-14xxh4s.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-large wp-image-18659\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2015\/05\/MasterChef.Katrina-Kozar-14xxh4s-423x600.jpg\" alt=\"MasterChef.Katrina Kozar\" width=\"423\" height=\"600\" \/><\/a>Katrina Kozar was into organic and local foods before that was cool.<\/p>\n<p>Kozar grew up eating meals prepared from her family\u2019s Brookfield gardens and from other local sources. Tonight, she will bring her cooking expertise to Fox\u2019s \u201cMasterChef,\u201d as one of 40 contestants vying to win a cookbook deal and $250,000. Milwaukee\u2019s Taylor Moore is also a contestant.<\/p>\n<p>The sixth season of \u201cMasterChef\u201d opens with a two-hour episode at 7 p.m. on Fox 6. Twenty of tonight\u2019s home chefs will go on to compete on subsequent shows, at 7 p.m. Wednesdays. Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay is one of three judges.<\/p>\n<p>Kozar, of Milwaukee, has been the administrative assistant to Director of University Housing Kelly Haag for nearly four years. She has cooked for family and friends much longer, but never professionally.<\/p>\n<p>She was one of hundreds who auditioned to be on \u201cMasterChef.\u201d In October 2014, she wowed judges in Chicago with her chilled Moroccan shrimp with a chimichurri sauce and roasted spaghetti squash, served with a jicama, fennel and apple slaw.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to get out of my comfort zone and see if I could make it to \u2018MasterChef,\u2019\u201d Kozar said in a recent interview. Although she is prohibited from disclosing details, Kozar said she did not seek fame as a chef, but rather the experience of learning from professionals.<\/p>\n<p>Kozar did not say what she cooked for tonight\u2019s show, but her \u201csignature dish\u201d is pan-seared salmon with panang curry sauce, rice and peas and slaw.<\/p>\n<p>As for the famously bellicose Ramsay, \u201cI could just tell
