But the journey from Milwaukee to Hollywood is shorter than you\u2019d think for graduates of UWM\u2019s Department of Film, Video, Animation, and New Genres and other Peck School of the Arts programs. Prepare to be star struck and #Pantherproud as you meet a few UWM alumni working in the film and television industries today.<\/p>\n<h2>Screenwriter for \u201cEmpire\u201d<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/dBzu_jKLJek?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Eric Haywood<\/strong> (\u201992 BFA Film) is on a roll with \u201cEmpire,\u201d one of the hottest shows on television. Haywood is a screenwriter for the Fox series about a powerful family\u2019s hip-hop music and entertainment business, which just wrapped up its first season. Haywood, who directed music videos and wrote screenplays at UWM, has also written for ABC\u2019s \u201cPrivate Practice,\u201d Showtime\u2019s \u201cSoul Food: The Series,\u201d and NBC\u2019s \u201cHawaii.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Studio brass<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gOW_azQbOjw?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to make movies,\u201d says <strong>Katherine MacDonald <\/strong>(\u201904 BFA Film). As vice president of marketing and production at Paramount Pictures, MacDonald is the liaison between the studio\u2019s production and marketing teams, working on films in varying stages of production. The summer 2015 release, \u201cMission: Impossible &#8211; Rogue Nation,\u201d is one of her projects. MacDonald transferred from UW-Madison to UWM at the suggestion of a friend at UWM who told her she\u2019d get more hands-on film experience in Milwaukee.<\/p>\n<h2>Lord of the special effects<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/V75dMMIW2B4?showinfo=0\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The name may not be familiar, but <strong>James Rygiel<\/strong>\u2019s work sure is. Rygiel (\u201977 BFA Painting and Drawing) began his career at one of the first companies to use computer animation in ads and films. Since then, he has supervised visual effects for movies like \u201cNight at the Museum\u201d and \u201cThe Amazing Spider-Man.\u201d His work on \u201cThe Lord of the Rings\u201d trilogy earned him three Academy Awards.<\/p>\n<h2>Movies about Milwaukee<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/121200663?title=0&amp;byline=0&amp;portrait=0\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Milwaukee filmmakers <strong>Michael Vollmann<\/strong> and <strong>Chris James Thompson<\/strong> (both \u201906 BFA Film) just scored a double win. After their short documentary, \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.the414s.com\/\">The 414s: The Original Teenage Hackers<\/a>,\u201d was accepted into the Sundance Film Festival, <a href=\"http:\/\/deadline.com\/2015\/01\/cnn-film-series-414s-sundance-1201356625\/\">CNN bought the rights<\/a> to premiere the film online in April. The two previously worked together on \u201cThe Jeffrey Dahmer Files,\u201d which was picked up by IFC Films.<\/p>\n<h2>From PSOA to San Fran, LA, Australia<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9hXH0Ackz6w?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Owen Klatte<\/strong> (\u201876 BS Architecture) and <strong>Angie Glocka<\/strong> spent a few semesters at UWM learning the basics of filmmaking and animation, then moved out to San Francisco to work in stop-motion animation on such films as \u201cThe Nightmare Before Christmas.\u201d Then came 15 years in Los Angeles working for major studios, plus five months in Australia on \u201cHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1.\u201d The husband-wife team returned to Wisconsin a year ago, but continue to work in stop-action animation. Klatte also teaches in UWM\u2019s Department of Film, Video, Animation, and New Genres.<\/p>\n<h2>An American classic in Mitchell Hall<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zMFZOu8rDUQ?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In 2004, the New York Times named \u201cAmerican Movie,\u201d by UWM filmmakers <strong>Chris Smith<\/strong> (\u201999 MFA Film) and <strong>Sarah Price<\/strong> (\u201998 MFA Film), one of the 1,000 best films ever made and the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Documentary_Association\">International Documentary Association<\/a> named it one of the top 20 documentaries of all time. The 1999 film followed an aspiring horror filmmaker in Milwaukee and won the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival. Smith directed and Price produced the film, which includes scenes filmed in the basement of Mitchell Hall.<\/p>\n<h2>Prime-time exposure<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2U1fPx-YEj0\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n<strong>Brittani Ebert<\/strong> (\u201902 BFA Theatre)\u00a0 co-starred on a recent episode of the CW comedy-drama \u201cJane the Virgin.\u201d After UWM, Ebert worked with Chicago\u2019s Steppenwolf Theatre Company for four years. Now based in Hollywood, Ebert works regularly on television, in commercials and theater. She\u2019s appeared on \u201cCriminal Minds,\u201d and is into her 34<sup>th<\/sup> episode as Debbie the Waitress on \u201cGeneral Hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Stop-motion to \u201cSpongeBob\u201d<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XgBUo2eFUXY?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tina and Carson<\/strong> <strong>Kugler <\/strong>(\u201996 BFA Painting and Drawing) met in a stop-motion animation internship in the Peck School of the Arts. In Hollywood, they animated such shows as \u201cSpongeBob SquarePants\u201d (the TV show and first movie) and \u201cDora the Explorer.\u201d Carson is currently storyboard supervisor at Nickelodeon, leading the team for \u201cHarvey Beaks.\u201d Tina spent three years at UWM, and has since found her dream job as a children\u2019s book illustrator, including \u201cIn Mary\u2019s Garden\u201d and \u201cSnail and Worm.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>International influence<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/K6upEXpPRKY?rel=0&amp;showinfo=0\" width=\"750\" height=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Being able to mount shows for the public as an undergraduate at UWM gave <strong>Daniel Sherkow <\/strong>(\u201971 BFA Theatre\/Honors) the confidence and experience to launch a Hollywood career. Today he is chief operating officer for Global Entertainment Holdings Inc. Sherkow also advises leading international media entities in Korea and China. He produced the 1991 film, \u201cImpromptu,\u201d which featured an all-star cast and aired on Masterpiece Theatre after its theatrical release.<\/p>\n<h2>Tech expertise distinguishes these Hollywood alums<\/h2>\n<p>A number of UWM graduates have moved into the technical side of television, film and computer animation. Just a few examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Gregg Lukomski (attended through \u201892) is CEO and founder of Slide Rule Inc. and a visual effects supervisor and consultant. He\u2019s worked on such films as &#8220;Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones&#8221; and &#8220;Gone in 60 Seconds.&#8221; He currently focuses on immersive, virtual and augmented reality technology for computer games and motion pictures.<\/li>\n<li>Sound editor Peter Zinda (\u201994 BFA Film) was nominated for a Best Sound Editing Award-Animated Feature by the Motion Picture Sound Editors for the 2014 film \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Vs5b3LYWZmA?\">Book of Life<\/a>.\u201d He has won other sound editing awards for his motion picture and computer interactive work.<\/li>\n<li>Ben Wolfinsohn (attended through \u201995) is a writer, director and animator. He produced the feature films \u201cNowhere,\u201d \u201cHigh School Record\u201d and \u201cFriends Forever.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Steven Russell Wells (\u201909 BA Visual Art) is a character designer for Nickelodeon Animation studios. After starting as an intern on \u201cSpongeBob SquarePants,\u201d he became character designer for Nickelodeon\u2019s \u201cSanjay &amp;
