{"id":160658,"date":"2026-10-05T16:06:14","date_gmt":"2026-10-05T21:06:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=160658"},"modified":"2026-10-05T16:06:14","modified_gmt":"2026-10-05T21:06:14","slug":"returning-to-college-gives-student-a-new-path-in-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/returning-to-college-gives-student-a-new-path-in-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Returning to college gives student a new path in life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stella\u00a0DuBrava\u00a0received her bachelor\u2019s degree from UW-Milwaukee\u00a0in August. But her path to that\u00a0degree\u00a0took longer than she originally planned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">She entered UW-Milwaukee in 2004 as an 18-year-old art history\u00a0major but\u00a0left in\u00a0her third year\u00a0to\u00a0become a hair stylist,\u00a0eventually opening her own salon in Fox Point.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the success of her business,\u00a0DuBrava\u00a0began thinking\u00a0about\u00a0finishing\u00a0her bachelor\u2019s degree. Cutting hair is \u201ca very physical job, and there\u2019s no safety net\u00a0if I\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0physically do hair anymore,\u201d\u00a0DuBrava\u00a0said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/related-coverage\/dream-bigger\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-158694 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2026\/08\/CHAN_Inaug_Media-Image_300x200-1.png\" alt=\"text reads: Always dream bigger. Inauguration of UWM Chancellor Thomas Gibson\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>She\u00a0decided to shift her major,\u00a0applying\u00a0to\u00a0join UWM\u2019s\u00a0Information Science &amp; Technology program.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI really wanted to get new skills,\u201d she said. \u201cIf\u00a0I was going\u00a0to spend the money and take the time\u00a0to do this, I wanted new tools\u00a0for\u00a0my toolbox. I\u00a0picked\u00a0technology\u00a0because\u00a0there was\u00a0a big gap in my knowledge and experience with it.\u00a0I\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0even know how to begin building a website, for example.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Re-entering the classroom\u00a0in\u00a0September\u00a02024,\u00a0after\u00a0nearly two\u00a0decades away, was challenging. As a\u00a0self-described \u201cartsy type,\u201d\u00a0DuBrava\u00a0felt less comfortable in a tech-focused environment.\u00a0But\u00a0meeting\u00a0dynamic\u00a0faculty members like\u00a0J.\u00a0Dietenberger, teaching faculty emeritus, made her feel\u00a0that\u00a0she\u00a0belonged.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHe was so positive, a real cheerleader, and made me feel seen,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">She began to see room for\u00a0creativity\u00a0in the field, and her\u00a0mind\u00a0opened\u00a0to new\u00a0skills and possibilities. She found project management \u201cdeeply fascinating,\u201d and\u00a0was intrigued by a user experience course she took with\u00a0instructor\u00a0Wonchan\u00a0Choi.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">She\u00a0especially liked its\u00a0connection to\u00a0disability\u00a0advocacy.\u00a0\u201cIf you pick a font for your website that looks really cool but people with dyslexia can\u2019t read it, you\u2019ve cut those people out of your conversation,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cThey\u2019re\u00a0not welcome in your space.\u00a0How do you make sure that as many people as possible can access that information and use it?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">This\u00a0interest\u00a0in digital accessibility\u00a0led\u00a0DuBrava\u00a0to\u00a0a\u00a0paid\u00a0internship\u00a0at UWM,\u00a0working on a\u00a0campus-wide\u00a0digital accessibility project. It involved ensuring\u00a0that all PDFs used for\u00a0College of Community Engagement &amp; Professions\u00a0courses\u00a0are\u00a0accessible to\u00a0all, including\u00a0people who use screen readers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">After\u00a0returning\u00a0to UWM,\u00a0DuBrava\u00a0maintained a 4.0 grade point average. She\u2019s currently on the job market,\u00a0seeking\u00a0work that incorporates\u00a0user-centered design\u00a0and\u00a0project management.\u00a0She feels like\u00a0she\u2019s\u00a0on the right path.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBeing cognizant of accessibility, making sure\u00a0that everyone\u00a0has a place\u00a0at the table, has been a\u00a0big part of my education,\u201d\u00a0she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stella DuBrava dropped out of UWM.
