{"id":160569,"date":"2026-10-01T17:05:23","date_gmt":"2026-10-01T22:05:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=160569"},"modified":"2026-10-01T17:05:23","modified_gmt":"2026-10-01T22:05:23","slug":"at-uwm-student-discovers-a-future-in-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/at-uwm-student-discovers-a-future-in-music\/","title":{"rendered":"At UWM, student discovers a future in music"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Back when he was a student at Arrowhead Union High School in Hartland, Devin Grabowski was a drummer and enthusiastic member of the marching band.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">He enjoyed it so much that he applied and was accepted to study music education at UW-Milwaukee. But months before he arrived on campus, Grabowski began to get cold feet.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/related-coverage\/dream-bigger\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-158694 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2026\/08\/CHAN_Inaug_Media-Image_300x200-1.png\" alt=\"text reads: Always dream bigger. Inauguration of UWM Chancellor Thomas Gibson\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>\u201cI was feeling a lot of imposter syndrome,\u201d said Grabowski, a first-generation college student. \u201cI had fully convinced myself that there was no way I could be a teacher.\u201d He switched his major to chemistry.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">As his first semester progressed, however, the science route didn\u2019t feel right. Grabowski reached out to Alex Wier, associate professor and head of percussion in UWM\u2019s Peck School of the Arts, to ask questions about the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/arts\/academics\/music-education-bfa\/\">music education degree<\/a> and his career prospects as a music educator.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Wier was supportive, patiently answering Grabowski\u2019s questions. After deliberating for several weeks, Grabowski decided to take the leap and become a music education major.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The following semester, he began taking music classes and percussion lessons with Wier, while playing with campus ensembles such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/arts\/students\/music-ensembles\/percussion\/#h-steel-panthers\">Steel PANthers<\/a>. Over time, he became a valuable member of the UWM symphony band, wind ensemble, orchestra and percussion ensemble, playing a range of percussion instruments including snare and marimba. He also earned a spot on the Milwaukee Bucks drumline, performing at the Fiserv Forum for basketball games.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_160570\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-160570\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-160570\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2026\/09\/Devin-Grabowski-300x200-conducting-2.JPG.jpg\" alt=\"A man holds a baton while conducting musicians. \" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-160570\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Grabowski conducts high school musicians while student teaching at Germantown High School. (Photo courtesy of Devin Grabowski)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In his third year, Grabowski\u2019s dreams grew even bigger. Several graduate students in the percussion studio had become his good friends and mentors, and he began thinking about following in their footsteps to get a master\u2019s degree in performance before entering the classroom to teach. The idea of spending two more years deepening his skill as a percussionist gave him a lot of joy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cTo educate, I have to really know music and know how to perform,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">During his fourth year, Grabowski began preparing for his final recital at UWM and the rigorous graduate school auditions. In addition to his weekly lessons with Wier, he began studying with Associate Adjunct Professor Chris Riggs, percussionist for the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The auditions happened to fall during Grabowski\u2019s student teaching, a requirement for his BFA in music education. Many education majors find this initial classroom experience to be stressful. \u201cIt was literally the busiest semester of my life,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">But the stress was worth it; Grabowski was accepted into four master\u2019s programs. And Wier provided valuable guidance once again, helping him compare the programs and offers to decide which one was the best fit. \u201cDr. Wier was essential to all of it,\u201d Grabowski said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">He selected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.okcu.edu\/\">Oklahoma City University<\/a> as the right place to earn his Master of Music in Percussion Performance. He headed south soon after graduating from UWM in May 2026.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">A few months into the master\u2019s program, Grabowski is already thinking about the possibility of earning a doctorate in percussion performance or ethnomusicology.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019m so happy that I found something that I just truly love,\u201d Grabowski said, noting that this journey feels particularly meaningful to him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019m pretty much the first person in my entire family to have a college degree,\u201d he said. \u201cSo to also pursue a master\u2019s degree is crazy to think about.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Devin Grabowski wanted to be a music teacher, but imposter syndrome got in the way.
