As she starts her final semester at UW-Milwaukee this fall, public health major Alana Fisher has been reflecting on what has made her time on campus successful.<\/p>\n

As a commuter, she rode the bus to campus from her home on Milwaukee\u2019s North Side, a ride that took nearly an hour each way. If she had a class in the morning and one in the late afternoon, she needed ways to stay busy in the hours between.<\/p>\n

\"text<\/a>\u201cI had to figure out, \u2018What am I going to do while I am here?\u2019\u201d said Fisher, a graduate of Rufus King International High School. \u201cI would always look for events that included food, but I would also ask, \u2018What sounds fun? And what am I interested in learning?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

One day, she wandered into the Women\u2019s Resource Center for an event, started chatting with staff and students there, and was soon hired as the center\u2019s content creator.<\/p>\n

Another time, she spotted posters on campus advertising undergraduate research opportunities and ended up joining a gerontology-focused program known as Success Through Aging Research.<\/a> She wasn\u2019t sure research would be a good fit for her, but she has loved working on an intervention for immigrants with dementia and their caregivers. Last year, she joined more than 30 UWM students who attended a national conference for undergraduate researchers in Richmond, Va.<\/p>\n

Fisher\u00a0also\u00a0said yes to being a\u00a0summer\u00a0orientation leader, helping incoming freshmen get to know campus.\u00a0\u201cI was interacting with lots of people,\u201d she said, which\u00a0built her confidence and leadership\u00a0skills.\u00a0In the process, she met the supervisor of UWM\u2019s Future Alumni Network ambassadors<\/a>, who encouraged her to apply for that program. Getting that job allowed her to help campus fundraising efforts.<\/p>\n

Staff at UWM\u2019s Center for Student Experience and Talent<\/a> \u00a0encouraged her to apply for a Diversity\u00a0in\u00a0Conservation internship through the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin, which\u00a0sparked her interest in environmental work. It also led to a\u00a0summer\u00a0job as a beach ambassador,\u00a0educating\u00a0people about beach conditions and water safety at\u00a0Bradford and McKinley beaches. \u201cI love talking to people and getting that information out there,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Central to her success, Fisher said, is making time to get know people at UWM, including students and staff at the Student Success Center, the Black Student Cultural Center, the Women\u2019s Resource Center, the Office of Undergraduate Research and the Zilber College of Public Health.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe more\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0talked to people, the more people knew my name and face\u00a0and started referring me to\u00a0things that they thought might be good opportunities,\u201d she said. \u201cIt just kind of snowballed.\u201d<\/p>\n

This\u00a0team of supporters\u00a0was especially helpful in tough times, including\u00a0the sudden,\u00a0traumatic death of her best friend,\u00a0which happened\u00a0around the time\u00a0she lost\u00a0her\u00a0aunt and\u00a0Victoria Pryor, the\u00a0much-loved\u00a0program\u00a0manager at the Black Student Cultural Center.\u00a0Her supporters helped her cope\u00a0and\u00a0stay on track\u00a0academically.<\/p>\n

As she prepares to graduate in\u00a0December, Fisher is still deciding\u00a0if\u00a0she\u2019ll\u00a0apply for\u00a0graduate school or\u00a0a\u00a0full-time\u00a0job.She urges current students to take advantage of the many resources available on campus, which are often free.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don’t think any other university could have given me\u00a0this rich\u00a0of\u00a0an experience,\u201d she said. \u201cAll of the things that I needed were here. I\u00a0had\u00a0all\u00a0these opportunities\u00a0and\u00a0built\u00a0this team of people who know me and have helped propel me forward.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
