Their parents had fled Myanmar and lived in Malaysia \u2014 where Osman and her siblings were born \u2014 until the U.N. Refugee Agency helped them resettle in Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/related-coverage\/dream-bigger\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-158694 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2026\/08\/CHAN_Inaug_Media-Image_300x200-1.png\" alt=\"text reads: Always dream bigger. Inauguration of UWM Chancellor Thomas Gibson\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a>As their English improved and they began to succeed in their classes, the sisters\u2019 guidance counselor suggested that they consider college.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe didn\u2019t know all of the opportunities that were available to us,\u201d Osman said. \u201cHe showed us that we could actually go to college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because she enjoyed design classes at Bradley Tech, Osman\u2019s counselor suggested she study architecture at UW-Milwaukee. He also helped her apply for scholarships. To her surprise, she was awarded a John P. and Tashia F. Morgridge scholarship, which covered her tuition and housing at UWM.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The summer before her first semester, Osman participated in <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/undergraduate-research\/programs\/uruwm-summer-research-for-incoming-students\/\">UR@UWM<\/a>, a monthlong program that introduced her to undergraduate research. She worked on the <a href=\"https:\/\/blcfieldschool2022.weebly.com\/\">Buildings-Landscapes-Cultures Field School,<\/a> a project of Arijit Sen, associate professor in the School of Architecture &amp; Urban Planning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Osman enjoyed working with other student researchers. When Sen invited her to become a long-term member of his research team, she said yes. It transformed her college experience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cUndergraduate research led me to a whole different path,\u201d she said. \u201cWithout it I would have been a student who just went to classes and to my dorm to do my homework, get my grade.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, she visited urban gardens around the city, collecting oral histories from people who tend vegetables and flowers there. One of her tasks was designing a cookbook of recipes from people with plots at the Cherry Street Community Garden.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was able to discover different parts of Milwaukee and see the beauty of them,\u201d Osman said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She has also deepened her language skills at UWM, working toward a minor in Chinese, competing in Chinese language competitions and completing two <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/in-focus\/alumni-student-news\/chinese-language-students-learn-about-tech-and-culture-with-summer-study-abroad\/\">study abroad programs in China<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI would love to be an architect that works in different languages and cultures,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She has one year left of the five-year Bachelor of Architecture program and is considering graduate school. Osman knows her 15-year-old self would be proud of how far she has come.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe would think, \u2018She is flying out of the country on her own. She is seeing other countries. She is grabbing these opportunities and going out of her comfort zone,\u2019\u201d Osman said.\u00a0 \u201cI am much more comfortable with the unknown.
