They were not quasars. They were not pulsars. They <em>were<\/em> a mystery, but thanks to David Kaplan and an international cohort of astronomers, the world is finally getting a glimpse of what is producing these puzzling energy bursts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kaplan, professor of physics and astrophysics at UWM, is one of the authors of a paper published in the prestigious journal<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41550-026-02882-x\">Nature Astronomy<\/a><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>in June.
