When Nialys Suarez was a senior\u00a0at Audubon Technology & Communication High School in Milwaukee, she set foot in\u00a0the\u00a0school\u00a0only twice\u00a0that\u00a0entire year.<\/p>\n

Instead, she spent her days at the campuses of UW-Milwaukee and Milwaukee Area Technical College through M-Cubed<\/span>\u00a0<\/sup><\/span>College Connections<\/a>, a dual enrollment program that helps students take college courses while still in high school.<\/p>\n

Suarez, a first-generation college student, said her parents supported her decision to participate in M-Cubed College Connections because it gave her the chance to earn two semesters of college credit for free. They also noticed that it ignited her interest in academics. Her high school grades were decent, but the experience had been underwhelming for her.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u00a0just wasn’t really focused,\u201d Suarez said. \u201cThis program gave me an opportunity to refocus and really figure out what I wanted to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

In her M-Cubed year,\u00a0she\u00a0took\u00a0classes in\u00a0math,\u00a0English, biology, educational\u00a0psychology\u00a0and ethnic studies.\u00a0She learned to go to office hours to ask her professors\u00a0for help when she needed it, and to put in the\u00a0work\u00a0outside of class.\u00a0She had support from staff\u00a0members\u00a0such as Jordan Kellogg, outreach program coordinator for UWM\u2019s Office of Dual Enrollment<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI gained a perspective on what college is,\u201d\u00a0Suarez said. \u201cWithout this, I don\u2019t think I would have been ready.\u201d<\/p>\n

It paid off. When she applied for college, Suarez was accepted to UW-Madison and UWM but chose UWM. \u201cI already knew so many people and made so many connections,\u201d she said. \u201cI already felt at home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dual-enrollment: ‘A difference-maker’<\/h2>\n

Data shows that students who do dual enrollment programs such as M-Cubed at UWM are more likely to enroll at UWM for college \u2013 and it increases their chances of graduating. Of the dual enrollment students who attend college at UWM, 42% graduate within four years, compared with 26% of non-dual enrollment students<\/p>\n

For\u00a0underrepresented\u00a0minorities, \u201cdual enrollment is a big difference-maker in their college success,\u201d said\u00a0Kathleen Breuer, associate director for dual enrollment\u00a0at UWM.\u00a0The\u00a02024-25\u00a0data shows that\u00a082% of\u00a0Hispanic students who completed dual enrollment\u00a0at UWM\u00a0returned for their second\u00a0year of college,\u00a0<\/strong>compared with\u00a070%\u00a0who did not do dual enrollment.\u00a0And 67% of\u00a0dual enrollment\u00a0Black\u00a0students came back for their second year, compared with\u00a062%\u00a0of non-dual enrollment students.<\/p>\n

College courses in a high school building<\/h2>\n

\u201cDual enrollment\u201d\u00a0is an umbrella term\u00a0that includes\u00a0multiple\u00a0programs, including\u00a0the Early College Credit Program<\/a>, M-Cubed and concurrent enrollment, an increasingly popular option that allows students to take college courses in their high school building, taught by a qualified instructor. In 2024-25, about 950 high school students took part in on-campus or virtual UWM courses, while 1,800 attended those classes at their high school.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s where\u00a0we\u2019ve\u00a0seen the most growth,\u201d said Vicki Bott, who oversees academic partnerships in UWM\u2019s Office of Dual Enrollment.\u00a0\u201cOf the 2.8 million high school students who earned college credit\u00a0nationally\u00a0last year, most were concurrent enrollment.\u201d\u00a0This\u00a0option\u00a0is easier for students\u00a0because they\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0need\u00a0transportation\u00a0to\u00a0campus or\u00a0technology\u00a0to access a remote class, she said.<\/p>\n

Concurrent courses\u00a0are typically taught by\u00a0qualified\u00a0high school teachers who work with UWM faculty mentors. The\u00a0mentor trains, supervises, and supports the high school teacher so that students taking a UWM class at their high school have an experience equivalent to those taking the same course on campus. The\u00a0dual enrollment\u00a0teacher receives\u00a0$500 from UWM for \u201cthe extra work that comes\u00a0with teaching a dual enrollment class,\u201d Bott said.<\/p>\n

UWM partners with\u00a0more than 25\u00a0Milwaukee-area\u00a0high\u00a0schools\u00a0to provide\u00a0some form of dual\u00a0enrollment to their\u00a0students. These include\u00a0public\u00a0schools, charter schools and suburban schools in\u00a0Brookfield,\u00a0Glendale\u00a0and\u00a0New Berlin, among others.<\/p>\n

What makes\u00a0dual enrollment popular?<\/h2>\n

High school administrators and parents\u00a0often request dual enrollment courses,\u00a0Bott said.\u00a0\u201cI would say it’s\u00a0partly\u00a0demand\u00a0from families,\u00a0a\u00a0reaction to the cost of higher education,\u201d she said. \u201cThey want to be able to do it cheaper.\u201d<\/p>\n

Students who apply\u00a0to\u00a0college with university credits\u00a0on their transcript\u00a0may be more competitive. And\u00a0having\u00a0students who\u00a0participate\u00a0in dual enrollment\u00a0raises\u00a0high schools\u2019 standings on state report cards, she added.<\/p>\n

In some cases, dual enrollment\u00a0may be\u00a0preferrable to Advanced Placement\u00a0courses.\u00a0\u201cIf students\u00a0don’t pass\u00a0that AP test,\u00a0they don’t get\u00a0college\u00a0credit,\u201d Breuer\u00a0said.\u00a0\u201cWith dual enrollment,\u00a0if you take the class and you complete it, you get the credit.\u00a0Students\u00a0don’t\u00a0have to rely on that\u00a0high-stakes test.\u201d<\/p>\n

Inviting students to make UWM home<\/h2>\n

While other universities in the UW system offer dual enrollment to high schools across the state, \u201cour goal is really to focus on Milwaukee students,\u201d\u00a0Breuer said.<\/p>\n

She and her colleagues\u00a0aim to\u00a0help dual enrollment students\u00a0feel connected\u00a0to UWM.\u00a0Kellogg,\u00a0the\u00a0outreach program coordinator, brings concurrent\u00a0enrollment\u00a0students to campus\u00a0for activities related to their courses.<\/p>\n

For example,\u00a0those\u00a0taking\u00a0an\u00a0Intro to Teaching\u00a0course\u00a0at\u00a0their\u00a0high schools\u00a0often attend the\u00a0annual Future Educators Summit<\/a>,\u00a0held\u00a0at UWM in partnership with the School of Education. High schoolers\u00a0spend the day hearing\u00a0from\u00a0keynote\u00a0speakers\u00a0and\u00a0participating\u00a0in hands-on activities\u00a0related to education\u00a0careers.\u00a0 Other students might join a class meeting of the same course on campus, participate in a workshop in the library, or tour the health sciences simulation lab, then have lunch in the Student Union.<\/p>\n

Students like\u00a0these on-campus experiences, Breuer said, and surveys reveal that\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0more likely to\u00a0choose\u00a0UWM for college\u00a0once\u00a0they\u2019ve\u00a0had their day on campus.<\/p>\n

Success and flexibility<\/h2>\n

Suarez is succeeding at UWM.\u00a0A\u00a0committed\u00a0student worker at\u00a0the Roberto Hernandez Center<\/a>, she expects to graduate\u00a0early,\u00a0in spring or fall 2027.\u00a0Entering college with 24 credits gave her the flexibility\u00a0in her first year\u00a0to explore\u00a0possible majors\u00a0such as business and communications, but she will graduate\u00a0with a degree in early childhood education.\u00a0She aims to teach the primary grades.<\/p>\n

She\u00a0credits dual enrollment for setting her on this path. And\u00a0she\u00a0encourages high schoolers to consider\u00a0it\u00a0if they are weighing the possibility of college.<\/p>\n
