It was a legitimate offer to collaborate with Grammy-winning rapper 2 Chainz, one of the leaders in the trap genre of southern rap music.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-156966 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2026\/06\/2-chainz-cover250x300-the-voice-in-my-head-is-god-9781668031155_xlg.jpg\" alt=\"An image of the cover of the 2 Chainz autobiography, &quot;The Voice in My Head is God.&quot;\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" \/>Fortunately, Harriell called the number in the email, and not long after that, he was sitting in 2 Chainz\u2019s Atlanta recording studio. Over the course of the next two years, Harriell flew to Georgia twice a month and helped 2 Chainz craft the telling of his life story.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The result is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/books\/THE-VOICE-IN-MY-HEAD-IS-GOD\/2-Chainz\/9781668031155\">\u201cThe Voice in My Head is God,\u201d<\/a> which was published in March and hit the bestseller list soon after.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think the thing that I\u2019ve been relaying when I talk about my participation in the book is that it wasn\u2019t an easy journey. \u2026 I was reminding (people) that this was a labor of love,\u201d Harriell said. \u201cWhen it hit the New York Times bestseller list, it\u2019s like, man, everything came together and it paid off, and it\u2019s a beautiful project, and it\u2019s being celebrated as such.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Harriell <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/in-focus-2026\/uwm-professor-co-authors-book-with-rapper-2-chainz-hits-nyt-bestsellers-list\/\">tells the whole story in an interview<\/a> with Sarah Vickery, of the College of Letters &amp; Science.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When UWM English Professor Derrick Harriell got an email offering him the chance to work with \u201ca famous southern rapper,\u201d he thought it was spam.
