It\u2019s set for Friday, April 24, 2026, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the UWM Student Union, Wisconsin Conference Center. The event is free and open to the public. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The symposium is UWM\u2019s biggest undergraduate research event yet. It\u00a0showcases\u00a0328 students presenting\u00a0almost\u00a0300\u00a0research\u00a0projects from various disciplines at UWM.\u00a0Students\u00a0showcase\u00a0outcomes\u00a0of their research collaborations with research faculty and staff, using\u00a0posters, oral\u00a0presentations\u00a0and prototype displays. The event gives the public a chance to see hands-on research at an R1 university.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">&#8220;Undergraduate research is\u00a0a high impact\u00a0practice,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/engineering\/directory\/abedi-ali\/\">Ali Abedi, UWM vice chancellor for\u00a0research<\/a>.\u00a0&#8220;It\u00a0changes how students learn and view themselves as scholars and professionals\u00a0belonging to the research enterprise.&#8221;\u00a0They\u00a0gain critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills through these experiences.\u00a0Research opportunities are key to UWM\u2019s mission\u00a0because they\u00a0help expand equity,\u00a0significantly\u00a0improve\u00a0retention\u00a0and boost graduation rates.\u00a0They\u00a0also\u00a0prepare students from all disciplines for success after college.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Supporting student success through research\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Most presenters receive Support for Undergraduate Research Fellowship awards, which require students to present their work in a public setting. Granted by UWM\u2019s Office of Undergraduate Research, SURF awards are one of the university\u2019s biggest investments in paid jobs for undergraduates Because the research opportunities are paid, they help reduce financial barriers for students.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">SURF awards offer students valuable, paid research jobs.\u00a0Recipients\u00a0become\u00a0research assistants\u00a0to their faculty\u00a0mentors.\u00a0Each\u00a0SURF project requires a faculty sponsor, with students and faculty applying together. Faculty mentors set expectations and guide the research process. They often work with industry partners or sponsors. This collaboration exposes students to real-world challenges and professional networks.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Proven impact on retention,\u00a0graduation\u00a0and workforce readiness\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Undergraduate research is vital for student persistence and completing degrees at UWM. Undergraduate research boosts student outcomes.
