{"id":148667,"date":"2026-02-26T12:36:16","date_gmt":"2026-02-26T18:36:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=148667"},"modified":"2026-03-04T11:19:44","modified_gmt":"2026-03-04T17:19:44","slug":"bilingual-global-studies-alum-shares-his-love-of-nature-with-job-at-the-shedd-aquarium","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/bilingual-global-studies-alum-shares-his-love-of-nature-with-job-at-the-shedd-aquarium\/","title":{"rendered":"Bilingual Global Studies alum shares his love of nature with job at the Shedd Aquarium"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>As Leonardo da Vinci once said,<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>\u201cLa naturaleza es el m<\/em><em>e<\/em><em>jor maestro<\/em>\u201d \u2013 \u201cNature is the best teacher.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>That may be true, but Eugenio Calderon is no slouch either.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Calderon, who graduated from UWM in 2024, is one of the<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheddaquarium.org\/\">Shedd Aquarium\u2019s<\/a><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>first bilingual educators on staff. The Chicago-based aquarium is best known for its stunning fresh- and saltwater exhibits housing over 32,000 animals, but the staff at the Shedd have additional missions: to protect endangered species and their habitats and to rescue and rehabilitate wildlife in need.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>One of the best ways to do both is to educate people about wildlife and the natural world. That\u2019s where Calderon comes in. Or rather, he goes out \u2013 into classrooms around Chicago to talk to students about the environment and the animals we share it with.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Here are three things you need to know about Eugenio Calderon and his work at the Shedd.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h2>The Shedd Aquarium is expanding its programs to reach a wider audience \u2013 including Spanish speakers<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>While the aquarium welcomes over two million guests each year, the staff want to make sure they\u2019re reaching people beyond the building\u2019s walls. So, the Shedd Aquarium has several community outreach efforts, including<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheddaquarium.org\/educators\/school-programs\">in-school programs<\/a><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>and educator-led nature field trips.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<figure class=\"alignleft uwm-c-img--left uwm-c-img--caption-gray\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_148681\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-148681\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-148681\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2025\/09\/Eugenio-Calderon250x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-148681\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Eugenio Calderon<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But when roughly one in five Chicagoans speak Spanish, teaching those programs can get a bit tricky. The solution was to make sure the aquarium\u2019s educators can speak Spanish, too.\u201cThis is the first time since the Shedd opened that they have hired bilingual staff, explicitly as part of their work position. They\u2019re expected to speak Spanish and know Spanish,\u201d Calderon said. As one of those bilingual education facilitators, he\u2019s helping to re-shape the education program to make it more accessible for all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are developing trainings for future bilingual staff as they got onboarded. We\u2019re establishing the foundation of role and discussing what that looks like for the future,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019re also discussing how \u2026 to support bilingual learners and audiences in different settings.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Calderon and his colleagues aren\u2019t stopping there. One of their current projects is to develop trainings for the staff to learn about universal design \u2013 creating lessons that can suit different learning styles for people who may be neurodivergent or have disabilities.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-2-calderon-excels-at-making-connections-with-people-from-different-backgrounds\"><b>Calderon excels at making connections with people from different backgrounds<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>That\u2019s due in large part to his own unique background. Calderon was born and raised in Mexico but moved with his family to Wisconsin when his father was offered a job in Appleton. Then in high school, Calderon spent a year as an exchange student in Italy.<\/p>\n<p>When it came time for college, he knew he wanted to go to a school that would allow him to continue studying around the world. UWM was a perfect fit.<\/p>\n<p>Calderon, who is interested in animals as well as in globetrotting, chose a global studies major with a<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/world-languages-cultures\/academics\/global-studies-major\/global-studies-sustainability\/\">sustainability track<\/a>. That enabled him to study abroad in South Africa, where he assisted in research to safely deter elephants from entering human villages, and in Costa Rica, where he participated in a wildlife rehab-and-release internship. He was also a<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/letters-science\/in-focus\/research-news\/uwm-undergraduate-students-get-involved-in-research\/\">student researcher at UWM<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe global sustainability (track) offered me the opportunity to combine environmental science and conservation on one end and in the other end, more of the geography and the politics and the cultural dimensions, everything that I like to learn about,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>With an education in both conservation and cultural communication, Calderon was a perfect fit for the Shedd Aquarium\u2019s bilingual education facilitator role.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love (that I) was able to bring my language skills and a lot of my intercultural and cross-cultural experiences into this role,\u201d Calderon added. \u201cI get to actually talk about animals and teach about animals, but I also get to focus on the sociological dimensions of conservation, which is extremely important.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-3-everyone-can-enjoy-learning-about-nature-no-matter-what-language-they-speak\"><b>Everyone can enjoy learning about nature, no matter what language they speak<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>As a bilingual education facilitator, Calderon\u2019s job is to teach a variety of classes: Virtual programs, in-nature programs at local parks, and classroom programs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI go to schools and I teach lessons in wildlife conservation and biodiversity,\u201d he said. \u201cWe do a program called \u2018Learn with Animals.\u2019 We go into a classroom, kindergarten through eighth grade, and we either bring a turtle or snake from the animal ambassadors at the Shedd. We\u2019ll teach a lesson on snakes or on adaptations of their habitats (for example), \u2026 and then the kids get to build a habitat for the animal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The activities are tailored to the grade level, and the lesson is tailored to the language the students speak.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to consider, what if an entire classroom has students that are both Spanish and English speakers, or some of them only speak Spanish, or some of them only speak English?\u201d Calderon said.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s culture to consider, too. What might be common knowledge in one culture may not be in another, and common knowledge is closely tied to language. That\u2019s where his multicultural and linguistic experiences come in handy. Calderon knows how to communicate across those divides and bring all of his audience into his lessons.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s important, whether he\u2019s working with teens during their summer internships through the Shedd Aquarium or leading a class on a walk through Humboldt Park.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy favorite program is by far nature field trips. Some of these kids have never been out in nature, and being able to give them a positive experience is something very empowering and very powerful,\u201d Calderon said. \u201cTo foster that spark for nature is one of my favorite things about my job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re disappointed that you\u2019re missing out on Calderon\u2019s lessons, don\u2019t worry \u2013 this coming year, he\u2019ll be giving behind-the-scenes look of the Shedd\u2019s shark exhibits as part of the<span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheddaquarium.org\/learn-online-with-shedd\">aquarium\u2019s virtual programming<\/a><span class=\"apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>in English and
