Jayden Varline, a University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee alum with a PhD from the Criminal Justice & Criminology<\/a> department, was always inquisitive. As a teenager, she stumbled across news coverage of the Casey Anthony trial and shows like \u201cCriminal Minds.\u201d It was her introduction to criminology and piqued her curiosity about how humans operate.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think sometimes we engage in a little too much of the sensationalized pop culture true crime,\u201d Varline said, who also worked as a research assistant at UWM. \u201cBut it really drew me to the topic from a young age.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her inquisitiveness led her to major in psychology. She loved how it provided answers and motivators behind human behavior. Psychology principles inform her job as a criminologist, including in evaluations determining whether a defendant is \u201cnot guilty by reason of insanity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have to see the overall picture of a person to understand them and relate to them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Uncovering victim blaming<\/h2>\n

At UWM, Varline worked with professors on a number of research projects each semester. But she’s most driven by her work studying sexual assault on college campuses.<\/p>\n

She understands the impact of sexual assault on survivors and the importance of preventing assaults. It\u2019s something that touched her life as a young woman. \u201cI have several close friends who have been assaulted and, really, that\u2019s why I have become so passionate about this research,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Her passion helped her convince four universities to send a survey on sexual assault to over 75,000 students for her dissertation.<\/p>\n

The confidential questionnaire included queries on potential victim-blaming beliefs and bystander responses, which Varline says are understudied. \u201cI was curious if we\u2019re doing enough to change mindsets around victim-blaming,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

The large sample size showed that victim-blaming is still prevalent, especially when the survivor was intoxicated. For example, when asked how much respondents would blame themselves if they were sexually assaulted, the majority reported high levels of self-blame.<\/p>\n

These attitudes may play a role in unreported assaults, too. \u201cPeople who report their sexual assault are put through scrutiny, and nothing comes of it a lot of the time,\u201d Varline said.<\/p>\n

The full study<\/a>, which also includes findings on less-studied groups, like LGBTQ+ people and men who are sexually assaulted, was published in 2025.<\/p>\n

Impact on college campuses<\/h2>\n

The National Sexual Violence Resource Center <\/a>estimates that one in five women will experience an attempted or completed rape in their lifetime and nearly a quarter of men experience some form of sexual violence.<\/p>\n

To combat those statistics, all incoming Universities of Wisconsin students are required to take online modules on bystander intervention in the first six weeks of classes. The training helps students recognize harmful situations and how to respond in a way that helps the victim.<\/p>\n

Varline is optimistic that the classes might reduce sexual assault on campus, she also thinks more can be done. \u201cI would love to have universities look at my research and realize that they can improve their bystander trainings,\u201d Varline said. \u201cMaybe make it a one-credit course that can be taken across a semester.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Varline hopes her research makes a difference in the future, she\u2019s honoring survivors today. She graduated with her PhD in 2025 and now works as a criminologist and postdoctoral fellow at the Institute of Forensic Psychology<\/a>. In addition, she’s working as an adjunct professor at UWM, teaching classes on women and criminal justice, and has also taught victimology, or the scientific study of crime victims.<\/p>\n
