As part of the Northwestern Mutual Data Science Institute’s speaker series, Dr. Aleksandra Snowden, associate professor of criminology and law studies at Marquette, will talk on “The Use of GIS In Community-Engaged Research, Teaching and Service,” from noon-12:45 p.m. on Friday, March 31, in a virtual session.<\/p>\n

Snowden will discuss how geographic information systems (GIS) can help address societal challenges facing Milwaukee. She’ll share her work on future interventions related to housing quality, interpersonal and vehicular safety, and equity in commercial investment in Milwaukee communities. Her main research interests include the effect of social structure on violence, the role of alcohol availability and neighborhood characteristics in violence, and the characteristics of alcohol-selling retailers that contribute to crime and violence in neighborhoods.<\/p>\n

NMDSI is a collaboration between Northwestern Mutual, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Marquette University.<\/p>\n
