Students are expected to read the book in preparation for guided reading groups, led by university faculty and staff during UWM Fall Welcome, Aug. 27-30.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian\u201d is UWM\u2019s third annual common-read selection. Kao Kalia Yang\u2019s \u201cThe Latehomecomer: A Hmong Family Memoir\u201d was the 2013 selection. The 2014 UWM Common Read Experience is co-sponsored by the Student Success Center and the Center for Instructional and Professional Development.<\/p>\n<p>The selection committee, led by Emily Clark of UWM\u2019s Center for 21<sup>st<\/sup> Century Studies, selected the book in part for its inclusion of the historical legacy of white violence against native populations in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Inclusion is one key theme within the book. Transition is another, and one that Clark feels will resonate strongly with the university\u2019s class of incoming students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe book deals with issues of transitioning from the comforts of a home environment to a new, challenging environment, and, in particular, a challenging educational environment,\u201d Clark says.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11768\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11768\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2014\/04\/Common_read_2014_j2-19pr8sj.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11768\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2014\/04\/Common_read_2014_j2-19pr8sj.jpg\" alt=\"Sherman Alexie\" width=\"250\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2014\/04\/Common_read_2014_j2-19pr8sj.jpg 250w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2014\/04\/Common_read_2014_j2-19pr8sj-211x300.jpg 211w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11768\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sherman Alexie<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Other relevant themes in the book are educational inequality, structural racism, poverty and cultural appropriation. \u201cImportantly,\u201d says Clark, \u201cthe book addresses these issues while managing to present nuanced and often positive portrayals of characters of all races, sexes and income levels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The sensitivity and diversity of content as packaged by author Alexie \u2013 noted novelist, comedian, screenwriter and poet \u2013 garnered instant critical praise, chart-topping sales and occasional entry on the \u201cbanned books\u201d lists of some school boards. \u201cThe Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian\u201d won the 2007 National Book Award for Young People\u2019s Literature.<\/p>\n<p>The 2014 Selection Committee included the following students, faculty and staff: Abigail Amissah-Arthur, Carl Bogner, Rachel Buff, Emily Clark, Jennifer Daood, Aaron Dobbs, Elizabeth Drame, Mark Eckman, Samantha Glazer, Kim Huettl, Jessica Hutchings, Jessica Nastal, Liana J.
