{"id":108072,"date":"2022-06-17T15:08:44","date_gmt":"2022-06-17T20:08:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=108072"},"modified":"2023-05-10T15:32:48","modified_gmt":"2023-05-10T20:32:48","slug":"an-actors-homecoming-willem-dafoe-returns-to-where-it-all-started","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/an-actors-homecoming-willem-dafoe-returns-to-where-it-all-started\/","title":{"rendered":"An actor\u2019s homecoming: Willem Dafoe returns to where it all started"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sitting in his crash pad while attending the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, in a room he\u2019d later vacate because the ceiling crashed down on him during a rainstorm, theater student Willem Dafoe wasn\u2019t dreaming of conquering Hollywood or Broadway, or even of making a life out of acting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">He just knew that he liked everything about theater and wanted to do it as long as he could.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Yet here he is, almost five decades later, with four Academy Awards nominations and well over 100 movie credits in a breathtaking variety of roles. Not only a stage and film actor, but one so revered that in 2020, The New York Times named him <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2020\/movies\/greatest-actors-actresses.html#willem-dafoe\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">one of the 25 greatest actors of the 21st century<\/a>. He\u2019s also one who retains a remarkable humility that\u2019s grounded in his Midwestern roots.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI went from situation to situation, and after many years of doing it, I have to admit finally I\u2019m an actor,\u201d Dafoe said. \u201cI found making theater stimulating socially at first and later, intellectually \u2013 and then later, for lack of better word, spiritually. I felt like this was my calling. My identity as a theater actor started when I was at UWM.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_108075\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-108075\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-108075 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2022\/06\/dafoegrad300x200-20220522_EH_IMC_5696.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-108075\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Willem Dafoe delivers his commencement address May 22. (UWM Photo\/Elora Hennessey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dafoe returned to where it all started for UWM\u2019s Spring 2022 graduation festivities. On May 22, he accepted an honorary Doctor of Arts degree and <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/find-what-you-love-and-practice-it-willem-dafoe-tells-uwm-graduates\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gave speeches at the morning and afternoon commencement ceremonies<\/a>. He was a picture of genuine and modest joy as the hood was placed upon his shoulders and as UWM Chancellor Mark Mone introduced him as Dr. Willem Dafoe. He advised graduates to be at peace with themselves, find what they loved and practice it however they could. He shook hands with and fist-bumped the grads as they walked across the stage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The day before, <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/down-to-earth-and-timeless-actor-and-alum-willem-dafoe-charms-students\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dafoe met 600 students<\/a> at the Helene Zelazo Center for a question and answer session about his life and career. They erupted in applause and cheers when he arrived onstage. Many nodded knowingly when he spoke of sleeping on a couch in the theater lounge \u2013 affectionately known as \u201cthe fishbowl\u201d \u2013 rather than at home. And they soaked up the words and wisdom he shared about the craft of theater.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-media-post alignright\" id=\"video_post-107322\"><div class=\"image icon-overlay\"><a class=\"image video-link\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/QxPKo0Eq3o8?autoplay=1&enablejsapi=1&origin=https:\/\/uwm.edu\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2022\/05\/20220522_EH_IMC_000-copy_resized-300x200.jpg\" class=\"attachment-medium size-medium wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2022\/05\/20220522_EH_IMC_000-copy_resized-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2022\/05\/20220522_EH_IMC_000-copy_resized.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><div class=\"icon-large icon-video\"><span class=\"text\">Play Video<\/span><\/div><\/a><\/div><div class=\"title\">Actor and Alum Willem Dafoe Speaks at UW-Milwaukee Commencement<\/div><\/div>\n<p>Now 66, Dafoe is still going strong. He appeared in six films released in 2021 \u2013 including Academy Awards best picture nominee \u201cNightmare Alley\u201d and \u201cSpider-Man: No Way Home,\u201d now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boxofficemojo.com\/chart\/ww_top_lifetime_gross\/?area=XWW\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the sixth-highest grossing film of all time<\/a> \u2013 and has another half-dozen or so on the way. Two of his Oscar nominations came within the last five years \u2013 for best supporting actor in \u201cThe Florida Project\u201d in 2017 and for best actor in \u201cAt Eternity\u2019s Gate\u201d in 2018.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">He\u2019s come a long way from growing up in small-town Appleton, Wisconsin, where his mother was a nurse, his father a surgeon, and he was the seventh of their eight children.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_108077\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-108077\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-108077\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2022\/06\/dafoestudio300x200-20220521_EH_IMC_2627.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-108077\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Willem Dafoe answers questions from Chancellor Mark Mone and some of the more than 600 students at the Zelazo Center May 21. (UWM Photo\/Elora Hennessey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dafoe began acting in community theater when he was young, even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.postcrescent.com\/story\/entertainment\/2019\/01\/17\/willem-dafoe-8-times-actor-appleton-newspaper-before-getting-famous\/2569510002\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">garnering a positive review<\/a> in The Appleton Post-Crescent at age 13. He kept acting in high school and began learning filmmaking (<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/zfw_-d8qzkA?t=428\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">which led to his leaving high school early<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">After high school, his friend Jim Gage convinced him to come to Milwaukee and enroll at UWM. Dafoe arrived in January of 1973 and took classes through the fall of 1974. He took as many theater courses as he could and dove into stage productions, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=96LEYMaUjWE&amp;list=PLylbcMvk6V54c9e4T5TD5GZcKNyMUIET8&amp;index=6&amp;t=23s\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">including \u201cPhaedra\u201d in Fall 1973<\/a> and \u201cA Moon for the Misbegotten\u201d in Spring 1974.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">He found himself among a diverse array of students and recalls how committed they were to their studies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe students in the Theatre Department were not just 18- to 22-year-olds with their sights on stardom \u2013 there was a wide experience and age range in the student population,\u201d Dafoe said. \u201cThere were women returning to school after having a family, Vietnam vets returning from service, first-in-the-family-to-go-to-college immigrants \u2013 a wide range of personalities and perspectives. He hung out at the <a href=\"https:\/\/onmilwaukee.com\/articles\/tuxedo-bar\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tuxedo bar on Downer Avenue<\/a> and ate at <a href=\"https:\/\/chucksplacefamilyrestaurant.com\/tradition\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Numero Uno pizza in Shorewood<\/a>. He saw movies at the Downer Theatre. He worked jobs at a bindery that printed men\u2019s magazines and as a dishwasher at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wuwm.com\/2022-04-15\/a-look-back-at-oriental-drugs-a-fountain-of-milwaukee-memories\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oriental Pharmacy diner<\/a>. He lived in rented rooms and at friends\u2019 apartments, and survived the ceiling collapse. At an apartment on Farwell Avenue, one of his roommates was a 4-foot-long golden tegu lizard named Angela.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">But the love for theater was constant, and he voraciously consumed it. He loaded up on theater courses, sometimes taking more than the standard 18 credits, and those lessons lasted for a career.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBecause so much of the Theatre Department was studio\/production-based classes,\u201d Dafoe said, \u201cit taught me how to collaborate with others and made me realize that each project requires a different approach. There is no bible of craft to stick to. The target is always moving, and you have to adapt to each situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">By 1974, Dafoe had gotten involved in Theatre X, an experimental theater company that started at UWM and became independent. He left school, and by 1976, he was ready to move to New York. But his time at UWM was invaluable.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_108081\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-108081\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-108081\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2022\/06\/dafoegrad300x200-20220522_EH_IMC_5035.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-108081\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dafoe fist-bumps a graduation during commencement. (UWM Photo\/Elora Hennessey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt was an important time,\u201d Dafoe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8wrCxo_42eg&amp;t=212s\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said last year on \u201cInside the Actors Studio.\u201d<\/a> \u201cI was young. I wanted to get going. I don\u2019t know, I had ants in my pants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">In New York, Dafoe continued in experimental theater, initially with the Performance Group and then the Wooster Group \u2013 where he created and performed in all the group\u2019s works from 1977-2003. In 1980, he snagged his first film role in \u201cHeaven\u2019s Gate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">What followed was an acting career marked by daring choices, fearlessness and great success. But returning to UWM for commencement was as notable for him as it was for the graduates he celebrated at UWM Panther Arena.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI always feel like it\u2019s important to go back and begin all over again,\u201d said Dafoe, who made time among his weekend responsibilities for a mini-reunion with Theatre X colleagues. \u201cBeing in contact and dialogue with students and people just beginning their working life is very instructive and inspiring, challenges you and reminds you about where you came from. It also helps you to check in with any level of corruption or complacency that has crept into your work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">And, yes, he\u2019s aware of the irony of being invited to stand upon the graduation dais.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI&#8217;m flattered that they think I merit the honor,\u201d Dafoe said prior to the weekend. \u201cAnd of course it\u2019s sweet, because technically I am a high school and college dropout \u2013 so to recognize that I was able to take an alternative road to a life of work and study reflects well on the university\u2019s open-minded thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a small-town kid studying at UWM in the 1970s, Willem Dafoe never dreamed of becoming a star.
