{"id":104787,"date":"2022-03-31T10:14:48","date_gmt":"2022-03-31T15:14:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=104787"},"modified":"2024-09-27T09:57:39","modified_gmt":"2024-09-27T14:57:39","slug":"uwm-faculty-member-awarded-fulbright-research-fellowship-to-france","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/uwm-faculty-member-awarded-fulbright-research-fellowship-to-france\/","title":{"rendered":"UWM faculty member awarded Fulbright Research Fellowship to France"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Carolyn Eichner, an associate professor of history and women\u2019s and gender studies, has been awarded a Fulbright Research Fellowship to France for 2022-23.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/womens-gender-studies\/carolyn-eichner-fulbright-research-fellow\/\">award will allow Eichner<\/a> to conduct more research for her upcoming book, \u201cThe Name: Legitimacy, Identity, and Gendered Citizenship.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/history\/people\/eichner-carolyn\/\">Eichner specializes<\/a> in the study of women and gender in 19th century France and the French empire.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am very thrilled and grateful for this honor,\u201d said Eichner, who will spend most of the upcoming academic year in Paris.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_104788\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-104788\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-104788\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2022\/03\/Eichner-250x300headshot-Jan-2022.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-104788\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Carolyn Eichner<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Her book looks at the significance of first and last names to individuals, families, and communities, as well as how governments use names as a way of monitoring, controlling, counting and taxing populations. It also examines how those individuals and groups resisted government efforts to restrict names.<\/p>\n<p>For instance, in the 19<sup>th<\/sup> century, French ruler Napoleon Bonaparte mandated that Jews take permanent last names as part of an effort to make France more inclusive, but also as a way to help to erase Jews\u2019 cultural identity, Eichner said. Similar mandates would later be imposed on emancipated Black people in French Caribbean colonies, as well as Muslims in the French colony of Algeria.<\/p>\n<p>Eichner said the idea for \u201cThe Name\u201d emerged two decades ago while researching another book in 2004. She describes the new book as a historical work that will touch on contemporary issues such as whether women take a spouse\u2019s last name at marriage, hyphenate or continue to use their birth name.<\/p>\n<p>The text will explore societal norms like how men are not expected to change their names when they marry and \u201cthe way that our culture values men\u2019s identity and individualism differently than it does women\u2019s,\u201d Eichner said.<\/p>\n<p>It will also delve into reasons behind why immigrants sometimes assimilated to their countries by changing names.<\/p>\n<p>Since its establishment in 1946 by Congress, the <a href=\"https:\/\/eca.state.gov\/fulbright\/about-fulbright\">Fulbright Program<\/a> has given more than 400,000 students, scholars, teachers, artists, and scientists the opportunity to study, teach and conduct research, exchange ideas, and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/eca.state.gov\/fulbright\/about-fulbright\/funding-and-administration\">primary source of funding<\/a> for the Fulbright Program is an annual appropriation by the U.S. Congress to the State Department. Participating governments and host institutions, corporations and foundations in foreign countries and in the United States also provide direct and indirect
