{"id":104227,"date":"2022-03-17T16:52:55","date_gmt":"2022-03-17T21:52:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/?p=104227"},"modified":"2022-03-17T16:52:55","modified_gmt":"2022-03-17T21:52:55","slug":"display-honors-uwm-childrens-learning-centers-50th-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/display-honors-uwm-childrens-learning-centers-50th-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"Display honors UWM Children\u2019s Learning Center\u2019s 50th anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Golda Meir Library is helping celebrate the <a href=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/childrens-center-celebrating-50-years-of-care-learning-and-fun\/\">50<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary<\/a> of the UWM Children\u2019s Learning Center with a history display on the second floor.<\/p>\n<p>The display was put together by Rona Kader Wolfe, social justice educator at the children\u2019s center, with archivist Abigail Nye and library staff.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_104231\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-104231\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-104231\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2022\/03\/clc300x200-20220310_EH_IMC_000.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-104231\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rona Kader Wolfe, social justice educator at the UWM Children\u2019s Learning Center, reads to children next to a display about the center at the Golda Meir Library. (UWM Photo\/Elora Hennessey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It highlights the origins of the center and its roots in the need for on-campus child care in the early 1970s as more women came to the university and prepared to enter the workforce.\u00a0 Looking at the past helped Wolfe see the connections between the work she now does as a social justice educator and the center\u2019s past, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s fun to learn about the history of the center, but to dig into the why of it at that time period was very interesting to me. It had a radical beginning,\u201d Wolfe said.<\/p>\n<p>The center grew out of student families\u2019 needs for child care and early childhood learning. \u00a0\u201cIt was important to learn not only where we came from, but why,\u201d Wolfe said. \u201cWhat were people looking for?\u00a0 What was important? What were the big ideas?\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_104230\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-104230\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-104230\" src=\"https:\/\/uwm.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/41\/2022\/03\/clc300x200-20220310_EH_IMC_006.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-104230\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Children listen as a book is read. (UWM Photo\/Elora Hennessey)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One of the items in the display is an excerpt from a student parent\u2019s essay sums it up: \u201cThe time was right and the idea would not be denied.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The display brings together items from the university\u2019s archives as well as materials stored at the center. Among the exhibits in the display, for example, are letters to the university administration about making the space the center needed, and the center\u2019s importance in helping students continue their studies.<\/p>\n<p>Wolfe is an alumna with a degree in elementary and early childhood education. Her mother, Cheryl Kader, was on the faculty in Women\u2019s and Gender Studies, and two of Wolfe\u2019s four children are graduates and another is currently a student. \u201cWe are a Panther family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of the children currently at the center visited the display recently, taking the opportunity to enjoy Wolfe reading a couple of children\u2019s books from 50 years ago \u2013 \u201cIra Sleeps Over\u201d and \u201cThe Snowy Day.\u201d The books give an idea of what people were thinking about in terms of families and values at the time, said Wolfe. The children listening to them half a century later were enthralled.<\/p>\n<p>The display will be open during library hours through the end of the spring
