Having open and honest conversations with your friends and family about prescription painkillers, heroin and fentanyl can be tough, but it may be the most important thing you do.

If you or someone you care about takes prescription opioids, you might talk about:

Anyone who takes prescription opioids can become addicted to them. Take only the prescribed doses on a schedule, also prescribed by your doctor.

A recommended dose for one person could be harmful to another. Don’t share your medicine.

Safely store your opioids in a locked drawer/cabinet to avoid others intentionally or unintentionally taking them.

Safely dispose of leftover medications in a drug drop box. UWM’s drug drop box is at 3410 N. Maryland Ave.

If you or someone you care about uses other opioids, you might talk about:

Many counterfeit pills are made to look like prescription opioids such as Oxycontin and Percocet. Counterfeit pills often contain fentanyl and can be deadly.

It is extremely difficult to know the exact ingredients of heroin and other drugs purchased from a dealer, the internet, through social media, etc. Drug potency and contamination (lacing) with harmful ingredients, such as illicitly manufactured fentanyl, can lead to serious consequences for health, including a deadly overdose.

Combining opioids with other drugs, including alcohol, increases the risk for an overdose.

Do not use alone. If you overdose, no one will be there to help.

Carry naloxone/NARCAN with you when you use opioids and tell a friend you have it. Available without a prescription at pharmacies, naloxone can reverse an opioid overdose.

Giving and Receiving Support: If you are concerned that a friend is misusing prescription pills or struggling with other drugs, show your support by having a conversation that comes from a place of concern, is non-judgmental and compassionate.

Tips for starting a conversation are available at Dose of Reality: Start Talking About Opioids, from the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.

If you think you or someone you care about has a problem with alcohol, prescription opioids or other drugs, reach out for support at University Counseling Services or Norris Health Center.
