UWM faculty, students encouraged to join in Smart Cities contest

UWM faculty members and students are encouraged to submit ideas to the Foxconn Smart Cities Smart Futures competition, aimed at encouraging the development of new technologies and concepts for smart, connected cities.

Submissions can be ideas for a single product — think about Marty McFly’s hoverboard in Back To The Future Part II — or concepts for connected communities.

The competition website opened Oct. 1 and will accept submissions through Oct. 31.

Foxconn launched the competition in partnership with the UW System, the Wisconsin Association of Independent Colleges and Universities and the Wisconsin Technical College System to spark innovation in smart manufacturing, optimizing resources, connecting infrastructure and creating tools for sustainable development. Up to 100 first-round winners will receive $500, up to 50 second-round winners will receive $1,500, and up to 16 final-round winners will receive $5,000.

UWM faculty and students who have questions about intellectual property rights or other aspects of the competition can contact Vice Provost Phyllis King.
