UWM alum named Wauwatosa police chief

James MacGillis, who earned his master’s degree in administrative leadership/adult education from UWM, was named police chief for the City of Wauwatosa on July 1.

He started at UWM in 2012 while serving as an instructor at the Milwaukee Police Department’s Training Academy, later moving to the multijurisdictional High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area program.

MacGillis talked about the value of his UWM education in a profile in the School of Education’s EdLine publication. The flexibility of UWM’s program was vital to him as an adult returning student and busy working professional, he said: “My work at UWM has helped me become a better teacher and leader.”
